Do you consider internet friends to be actual friends?

Oh, hey.
This is assuming you have never actually met them.

Would you consider them true friends or simply acquaintances?

As odd as it is, I can't really consider someone a true friend unless I've actually spoken to them face to face in person.

That doesn't mean I don't care about them, I do, but it's just a lot harder for me to actually count them as a true friend.

Online friends are just acquaintances to me

Yeah, I agree with you. I really don't see internet friends as actual friends.

Unless I'm trying to inflate how many friends I have to other people if they ask me. :)

I've met two users on here. IRL. They were pretty cool people. It was a bit awkward at first, but we had a blast once we got going.

EDIT: That sounded a lot more sexual than I had intended.

Almost always, with moderation
Considering the stuff I've shared with the friends I've made on the internet, I would say so.

Which users did you meet up with. I've met up with one, and there was another I was *supposed* to meet up with. But that didn't go as intended.

Why is this so black?
People you meet on the internet are still people. I'd say that makes them eligible to be real friends.

His eyebrows sparkling, his white beard hangs down to his chest. The thatched mats, spread outside his chise, spread softly, his splendid attos. He polishes, cross-legged, his makiri, with his eyes completely absorbed.

He is Ainu.

The god of Ainu Mosir, Ae-Oine Kamuy, descendant of Okiku-Rumi, He perishes, a living corpse. The summers day, the white sunlight, unabrushed, ends simply through his breath alone.
No. I can't seriously put people on the internet on the same level as people I've known and done activities with in real life. Plus, no matter how insistent you are on it, nobody truly can act the same on the internet as they do in reality. I can't really know if I'd like anybody until I actually met them in the flesh.

To be honest I don't think I've ever actually had any real friends. Looking over my history with people.

They've all just been passerby.

Whether it be me who changes with time or them, every last one of them have all been passerby.

Your question then. Yes and no. I call people friends. And I always try my best to be a friend. Essentially, I'll be your friend. But you won't be mine. At least, not for long anyway.

Yes. People will say that you aren't the same person online as you are offline. Even I've said that in the past, but honestly, I think it's bullshit. I think your Internet self is you showing your "true" personality, and your offline self is you obfuscating your personality. The Internet is where your true self appears.

Even if you're a troll, that says a lot about your character. You're someone who likes to take advantage of people's perception--in other words, a cunt. Something that may or may not be quite as evident in your offline life.

So, considering that I know a lot of my Internet friends better than the people in their own lives know them, yes, I consider them friends. Some of them are my closest.

800 give or take.

Listing three people I know who I particularily spent a lot of time with.

One was sort of half and half. More of an acquaintance.

One was a good friend for a few years. Drifted apart and eventually shattered before I left highschool.

And another, who is a good friend for a few years, is far away now in one of the cities.

To be honest I think I just latch on to outcasts I bump into because I'm fleeing that crippling sense of being on my own.

I'd say it's actually just your more quiet thoughts. Things you keep to yourself. Not necessarily any less true or false. But an extension of the quiet parts of your head.

The majority of things I say on here are things you could bring up with a conversation with me in person. But otherwise, in person, I'm quiet. Friendly. But quiet.

Hence why I chose the word "obfuscate". People tend to hide, or keep quiet, their true thoughts in person, as you said.

Part of it is that I've known some of my Internet friends for years. Some of my oldest ones, I've known for 8+ years. We've never met, but I think it would be an insult not to consider them friends. They are. The only thing that separates us, metaphorically, is the screen--that's how close we are. The screen is auxiliary. It's an arbitrary distinction.

I neither fear, nor despise.
Some are true friends. It just sucks that if you lose communication with them online, that's it unless you get emails and phone numbers.
