Like okay you can be a weeb, that's fine but then people watch some anime and then go round saying 'yeh man I'm an otaku XD'

Isn't it a term used for people with no lives who have a very unhealthy obsession with anime and or games? Why would you act like that's a really cool thing and go round calling yourself it?

Saying "Otaku" is like saying "Hacker." Both mean the people are actually very invested in their interest, whatever it is. There's a connotation with particular interests that colors perception of the terms, however.

Both just mean you're really passionate about something, to an obsessive point.

I guess it would largely depend on someone's judgement. Someone who was working on a cancer cure for 40 hours straight would be seen in a different light than a WoW player raiding for 40 hours straight.

I think obsession can be utilized beneficially.

Actually in Japan being called an Otaku is considered an insult. It's sort of parralell to being called a basement dwelling neckbeard in north america.

That's the colloquial meaning and association... which may as well be the definition for its effective use.
It's because of things like this that queer doesn't usually mean weird anymore, though the word itself sounds weird (and I like it).

the one true God is Doctor Doom and we should all be worshiping him.
Otaku has to do with any fandom. There are sports otaku, military otaku, technology otaku, political otaku, history otaku, all sorts.

It's generally used to describe somebody who is so fixated on their area of fandom that they have little else beyond it. That's why anime otaku are generally mocked - because anime contributes nothing, as opposed to history, politics, technology, and the like.

What most people think of when they hear otaku, however, is hikikomori - basement-dwelling to the tenth power, basically. It's considered pitiable instead of sneer-inducing in Japan, though.

“You see, whether you can draw like this or not, being able to think up this kind of design, it depends on whether or not you can say to yourself, ‘Oh, yeah, girls like this exist in real life. If you don’t spend time watching real people, you can’t do this, because you’ve never seen it. Some people spend their lives interested only in themselves. Almost all Japanese animation is produced with hardly any basis taken from observing real people, you know. It’s produced by humans who can’t stand looking at other humans. And that’s why the industry is full of otaku!”

He's right though, a lot of anime lacks human empathy and settles for shallow pandering.
I mean, he's saying the fans are ruining their own medium as self-indulgent escapists.

I think it's cyclic from a studio-viewer perspective, with a lot of responsibility on a viewer-base that doesn't recognize its own influence. Studios make shallow content to stay afloat and consumers indulge it, but consumers don't consider things from a business perspective and fund the projects that would take more monetary assets to make better quality shows. That's why I think Kickstarter's a good choice to bring high budget works that wouldn't otherwise be approved.
I'm not even aware of the conditions in the industry, but from the few articles I've read online, everyone on a project who makes recognizable aspects of a show aren't even compensated enough to sustain themselves.

Viewers have responsibility I don't think enough of us understand, and certainly not people who indulge shallowness in their anime. That being said, I have a lot more understanding to do and investments to make to manifest anime I enjoy.
Does that make us anime elitists?

The angel agreed to trade a set of white wings for the head of another demon. Overjoyed, the demon killed one of his own and plucked the head right off its still-warm body.

The angel then led the demon to heaven, where he underwent centuries of the cruelest tortures imaginable. Finally, the pain was so great that he lost consciousness - at which point his dark wings turned the promised shade of white.
Some still take pride in it
