Do Americans unironically clap in movie theaters?

It's just kinda awkward if the movie ends and people just silently start shuffling out. Applause means that others enjoyed the movie, and it makes the whole experience feel more worthwhile.

The bigger question is, why is this an issue? Going to the movies in this day and age is definitely a social thing. If you don't like other people laughing, clapping, talking, etc, then don't go to the movie theater. Things like Netflix and the Internet exist for a reason.

Americans clap at movie premieres that the stars and directors are at because the people who made it are there presenting it to you.

I've never been in a theater and heard someone clap though.

Goodness gracious, great balls of lightning!
I've never seen or heard clapping when I've been to the movies.

I have however, heard an older guy yell at someone for bringing their phone out during the movie. It was hilarious.

it was harry potter and the deathly hallows part 2
that's the only premiere i've been to where everyone clapped--and it was during four parts of the film

Spoiler
- when McGonagall made the statues come alive and had her little one-liner
- when molly killed bellatrix
- when neville killed nagini
- the credits

and it was probably the best experience i've ever had at the cinema, because the audience was so into it
sooooo

Only in theatres on Broadway.

I neither fear, nor despise.
Sometimes. It happened at both Avengers midnight premieres, for The Dark Knight Rises, for The Fast and The Furious 7 (for Paul Walker), and a few others.

Mainly midnight premieres or opening days though. After that nobody cares lol

So people in America tend to clap at kid's movies more often than respectable films? It makes more sense that way I guess, kids get excited with all the action and loud music, they probably just need to vent their energy.

Not kids movies, just ones that are either really stupidly popular, or have an emotional reation  like Paul Walker dying.

Hmm I think I see what you're getting at here.

So, in short, would it be fair to say that Americans clap during a movie but don't clap during a film?

For the general audience, they prefer movies over "films" (if by film, you mean something more artistic and sophisticated in material).

I heard they clap when a pilot lands their flight safely too.

Only on rare occasions I've had this happen.
One of the few was landing in thunderstorms created from a tropical storm that was a distance away. Created a lot of turbulence.

It's a singer's job to perform, but people still clap for them.

I've only seen people clap at the end of one movie. I cant remember what it was but I think it was either transformers or Rise of the Planet of the Apes. Most likely the latter.

When I go on a plane it's always to DR so when the pilot lands it's just a bunch of Dominicans yelling and cheering.

I used to go to the movies A LOT and I've only seen it happen once. When O was a kid there was a shooting when I was trying to see happy feet

So I've seen people clap in movies just as often as I've seen mall shootings outside movie theaters

Poor comparison. They're entertainers, big difference.

Plus, I wouldn't call singing a career, more of a hobby that just happens to make money. No one goes into entertainment for the sole purpose of making money, or at least they shouldn't.
