-Palpatines defeat was the single lamest fight in anything nice seen in my life. "Oh no not TWO lightsabers! My one mortal weakness apparently.

-No concequences for Rey's huge ass fuck ups. Made worse because this is going to keep the incels calling her a Mary Sue even though they're just completely objectivity wrong on every single level at this point.

I see most reviewers just complaining about the plot, but the main issue with the movie is that the pacing is frantic and it feels very uncinematic like none of the other movies do. It kind of reminded me of Spectre, oddly enough. A lot of people are going to say that this should have been 2-3 movies but they're wrong. The main plot is really simplistic when you think about it. I'd say it's easily one of the worst of the franchise. There's a lot more I can say but this is one of those movies that you start to forget about immediately.

I completely agree. It's not complicated; characters barely speak and all of the runtime is spent on moving from location to location or setting up fake-our deaths that ultimately serve no purpose. It seemed to be built entirely on the premise of milking every ounce of love for the characters through half-baked emotional tugs and fan service.

this movie was definitely star wars at its most soap opera-iest, but i don't necessarily consider that to be a bad thing

i'm more or less satisfied with it; all the twists were fun, but i found the climax difficult to take seriously

I know and sort of agree with what you're getting at, but I don't think cartoon is the right word. I think "campy" is a better term. Star Wars is very cliche and campy but I think when it is done well, it can be endearing and fun.

i guess i just don't understand where the newer movies failed to do that well

there's certainly a difference in tone--later in that stuckmann review, he used the term "Marvel-y" to describe certain scenes in TRoS, which is something i actually agree with a lot

but at the same time, i don't dislike that the three trilogies do not all feel the same, because this is a new era, and if i want to watch the OT, i'll watch the OT (although i never want to watch the OT)

the biggest criticism of the new trilogy that i can accept right now is that the three films do not cohere as well as the previous two trilogies did

I haven't seen it yet. Probably wont until after the home release. My dad saw it and said the pacing was totally off. If what I heard about so many scenes being cut is true then that would make sense I guess. He's pretty pissed that they basically scrapped everything they filmed with Hayden Christensen, Ewan Macgregor etc. but still enjoyed a lot of what was there. I'm pretty disappointed about the cuts as well. I don't care if the movie would've been around 3 hours, I think it should've been tbh. They had so many loose ends to tie up.

I'm probably not going to see The Rise of Skywalker until its out on Netflix anyway. Its what I did with The Last Jedi.

Star Wars from the very beginning has always been a flawed story, but I gotta admit, I don't like the way Disney is handling it. At least the music is still great. Thanks John Williams.

Hoping the film drops on Disney+ UK soon so I can see how it holds up. Having given it some time there are things that I'm feeling more positive about and other stuff that I hate.

I still think the Sequel Trilogy as a whole gets too much flak and isn't even that much less cohesive than the Original Trilogy. The characters are definitely my favourite out of all the trilogies.
