Meta, how open are you to the idea of allowing more threads in Serious? Sometimes I find your judgment questionable (like... not allowing Mad Max's thread about his significant other's passing in there).
We should just not allow Mad Max to make any threads... anywhere... forever..
*eyeroll*

At least 13 of the threads currently on the front page of Serious would be moved under our model.

The site staff will (likely) be holding a poll to gauge which style of moderation the website would like to see -Strict, Lax, or a Hybrid (More on the three options will be in the poll thread). This will help determine new moderation systems and punishment outlines.

I'll link to the poll once it's been finished and posted.
Fucking gays and their hybrids.

It's not pink, it's lightish red.

All right, all right. Those ones don't fit under what I'd consider politics/religion. Everything else you mentioned, I think could be chalked up pretty easily. And as for that last one, I mean, you made it, so I'm inclined not to count it.

Regarding communication between the mods and members, I had a recent suggestion that basically included a response window with each report. Every mod dealing with a report would then provide a quick and anonymous response on what they did and why. Does anyone feel like this would be a good idea?
The anon part has merit.
But why not just PM the user?
This is about communication, why not use the tools that are already there and for that particular use?

The ones I listed which didn't have explicitly political titles shouldn't be in Serious simply through their lack of actual, serious content. Just look at Comms' Assadists thread - it's just a bunch of Syrian Army propaganda.

It may be political in character, but it doesn't have the necessary content to facilitate discussion.

Because Flee's system would link right to the report - there is already a comment system on reports for moderator's to use to add comments - those comments would be sent to the reporter as Anonymous PM's.

So it would say

"Report received, looking into"
"Warning given"
Etc.

Well I mean, you already sort of have that ability with PMs.

Doesn't feel personal enough.

I think - as long as we have the monitors - they should serve the role as communicators. You could modify such a system, and make it so moderators choose the response to be made and then the monitors "pick up" the various responses and personally deliver them to whichever user on behalf of the moderator.

Umm... I guess that would be okay. I don't really see much of a point beyond getting a vindictive hard-on over someone's punishment, but... I like hard-ons.

But then, why not just automate it if you go that far?

Because, at the point it becomes automated, it's impersonal and loses the whole "communication" aspect.

PMs work and are there for use.
You said yourself that Psy already does a lot through them. Why is this different?

It just seems that hiding which mod is doing the moderating, links back to the whole "mods are afraid of backlash when they moderate" thing I and others have talked about.

Either get shit done and drop the popularity actif this is the case, or step down and let someone willing to take hits do the job right.

Problem is, Monitor's don't have access to the report system to see what is reported - nor can they see the actions being done by Moderators. It became a process to get information from a Ninja who isn't on Skype (Where we do most of our discussing as it's quicker), for the Monitor to then send a PM.

Would it not be possible to create an auxiliary system alongside the report list, a sort of "response list" which doesn't necessarily need direct 1-to-1 communications between monitors and moderators?

I think how receptive a moderator is to the community can be shown simply through the mods' participation in threads. Which, you know, all of them already do a great job of doing.

That would come to Cheat/Isara to find out. I'm not aware of the coding, or potential for it to happen.

This is the way the world ends. Not with a bang but a whimper.
But that would just be a pretty pointless extra work. I'm not opposed to giving monitors more abilities and a better defined role, but it seems like a hassle and a delay to communicate what I do to the monitors so that they can further deliver the message to the members. Why not just let me write a quick comment that gives the person reporting a post immediate feedback.
That's my concern too.

I'm just concerned about the role of the monitors, to be honest. Whether or not they or the mods deliver the messages is relatively unimportant, but as long as we have the monitors lying around they may as well be able to do things.

We could, for instance, allow them to censor posts or dole out "ultra-lite" bans consisting of about 30 minutes up to a couple of hours if a mod isn't around to deal with the situation properly, or some shit flinging needs to be stopped.

We've heard that concern.

Monitor's have been given the ability to lock threads - but it is only to be used if there are no Ninja's online, to help handle problems in such an event.

I believe we are also looking at additional fixes to help make the role more useful - but at the time time, it's a balancing line to make sure the Ninja's don't become too similar to Monitors.

This is not the greatest sig in the world, no. This is just a tribute.
This shouldn't be that hard guys...

1: Ban Kinder and Chellenger more often in Serious
2: Discourage 100% useless threads in the Flood
3: Ban ponies.

But whatever we do do - there won't be happiness. If we become more strict, we are becoming Waypoint. If we become more lax, we apparently don't care about the forums.
You're putting words in my mouth. At no point did I say there needs to be a change in the strictness or the laxness of the punishments, themselves.

Not you exclusively Meta. We already have your suggestions.
I know you do.

Although that actually highlights the underlying point I'm making here; it's about a communicative deficiency. I PM'd those suggestions to Isara and Mr P. and have heard nothing since this thread - no acknowledgement that they were being discussed or if anything was going to move forward. On some level is promoted a feeling of "why bother", but the more pressing issue was the fact that it gives the impression of an inefficient system into which ideas and suggestions are placed and nothing is done.

The fact that you're discussing them is good, of course, whether you like them or not but it isn't enough to fix the deficit in transparency and understanding between the moderation team and the community.

I've made my point by now, though, so I'll just leave it here unless you have any questions. I do have confidence that the moderation team is working in the right direction, it's just difficult to tell how effective such efforts are at the moment.

I have to say, it was discussed but nothing concrete has come about because of the timing >.>
It's christmas eve already and I've been busy as I've ever been with IRL shit ._.

Looks like there are some things being done though >.>

I think if we ever implemented the system verb, meta, and sandtrap are speaking of (stricter moderation) I'd probably end up leaving.

Part of this places appeal is its lax atmosphere.
