We can only communicate as much as possible. An example was allowing everyone to see the "Warned" title  to show that we actually gave out warnings frequently. Of course, then people used it as an accessory and just shitposted to get it.

It became less of a punishment.
I don't fucking know. I just don't think it has to be this difficult.
It doesn't have to be. It really doesn't. If you mind your own business, letting the shitposters shitpost and having your "meaningful discussions" with whoever will indulge you, there wouldn't be any issue.

We can only communicate as much as possible.
It's obvious that there's currently a deficiency in communication.

I'm curious, what would you suggest in terms of communication?,
I'm just going to post the recommendations I made to Isara:

Quote
Obviously, we can't be banning people left right and centre otherwise we'd have no community left - but it's clear that something needs to be done.
- Expand the moderation team
- Improve the roles of monitors
- Standardise the system
- Better communication

Of course, it's all about balance in approaching these issues. Expanding the moderation team runs the risk of upsetting the ratio of users to moderators, and could result in people seeing the moderation team as a ramshackle confederation as opposed to a tight, monolithic organisation of people willing to keep the community up-to-scratch. In saying that, it's not clear that we're understaffed either. I think the lack of communication between the users leads to a feeling of neglect and the illusion that we might not have the man-power, when in fact we just need a more streamlined system. However, replacing Sandtrap - as well as adding perhaps another new moderator - in conjunction with the next point wouldn't be a bad idea.

The roles of monitors, also, need to be expanded. In truth - and I'm not sure how many people agree - the monitors are largely defunct and useless. They don't do anything, it's like the moderation team puts them there so it looks like people are around keeping an eye on shit. All they do, however, is dole out hesitant warnings and reluctant words of caution. Monitors need to be beefed up, and be put in a position of support to the moderators - acting as the bridge between them and the community. They need to be, in essence, the boots on the ground talking to the community and relaying the moderation team's information. They need to be dropping PMs to users who make reports and telling them that the ninjas are considering a proper course of action, and they'll be kept in the loop as to what's happening.

Standardising the system could be tricky and I'm no programmer. The warning system based on percentages was a good start, but we need to be able to say "if you do this, we'll do this", and stick to it. We rely to much on the discretion of the ninjas which, while valuable in serious instances - like Camnator's fucking retarded reveal of Nuka's personal information - it becomes something of a joke when you have Challenger and Kinder hurling insults at each for pages on end. There's also a degree of bias, as much as I hate to say it, within the team. Kinder deserves the bans he gets when he steps over the line, but it's usually in response to something from Challenger which is clearly pissing him off. Is he right to be upset? I don't know. But we need ninjas (and monitors) in the threads either telling Kinder why he shouldn't be upset if Challenger actually hasn't done anything wrong, or explaining to him personally what the team is doing about Challenger's behaviour, which he is reporting. I'm also not calling them out, just using them as an example. I also think monitors should be able to edit/censor posts, as ninjas do.

And, of course, better communication has been the central theme all through my proposals.

The staff has already discussed these suggestions. I'm referring to communication. Yes, you mention posting in threads about why someone shouldn't be upset - but at the same time, publicly posting moderation decisions also opens the door for more fighting and drama.

It's why usually one mod (Psy) PM's the people involved.

If the horizon were the problems needed to be moderated on this forum, the moderators are aiming 45 degrees west of it.

Come on now, ms. CAP, how do you aim west of a plane that exists on that axis?
When did I mention a plane? I was talking about an objective horizon.

To me, that was a big mistake to remove that. Because if you're willing to shitpost just to get it, that just goes to show how much contributional value THAT user has, if that's how they're gonna treat their forum. That's why if they continue, BAN the fucker. Permanently. They're obviously not fit for intelligent discussion/posting.

I mean, I hate to blame Noelle, but that whole trend sort of was her fault, but she was just being vindictive. And just like the sheep that a lot of this community consists of, they followed it.

I don't fucking know. I just don't think it has to be this difficult.
This issue was more or less resolved with the removal of custom options upon a formal warning. Having those go away for a while isn't exactly an accessory like that "watched" state was, but at the same time it didn't impact a user's posting ability unless they were lite-banned.

The staff has already discussed these suggestions.
There's a degree of vindication in the fact that nobody told me that.

When it comes to communication it looks most like a structural deficit within the moderation team - the responsibilities are too top-heavy. The monitors have no role besides doling out stern words and having different coloured text. There's clearly room for monitors to fulfill the role as communicators for mods, and adding that removal between the mods and the community should also help insulate the former from accusations of bias when the monitors are primarily focused on relaying information.

Right, I forgot about that. That's good. Sort of. I mean, I'm having trouble putting myself in the position--like, not everyone has a titlebar, and not everyone really cares enough about their titlebar. Let alone the words on it.

But it's something...

No. Actually I'd say too leinient. The problem is, the mods are trying to play nice, trying to play fair. Going for diplomatic approaches and working out things between users.

Working to come to a middle ground is fine and dandy. But repeat offenders have shown that it's a fucking circle. They spew shit through their teeth when it comes to agreements and truces or can't put a fucking lid on it and use some common sense so inevitably they can, will, and do start bullshit again.

And the worst part is, the site is hostage to the crybabies because they go over on bungie and whine and bitch and moan. I understand that as we are if we stay stagnant we'll burn out. And that's not cool. This is a decent place. And drawing in new people in bits and pieces would be nice.

But, at the same time if you take a shotgun to any and all then this place will be a ghost town becasue

A) Crybabies detract from our overall tone and friendly appearance
B) People who don't sit the fuck down and put a lid on it aren't neccessarily bad, they just don't know when to put a lid on it and will feel offended and leave
C) Playing favorites with two arguing users results in one screaming mod bias and banning both results in one whiny little bugger doing the whole dance and leave bullshit over on bungie.net

Long story short? No, the mods aren't strict enough. But at the same time, they have to be leinient. It's exactly like the government. People blame it for everything and yell and scream and shout when the actual fact is people need to wake the fuck up and take a look in the mirror.

Are the mods perfect? Fuck no. But we'd go a long way if the fucking people here didn't start shit and stir up trouble and whine and bitch when it blows up in their face.

To be honest, if it was me calling the shots here, I'd have probably run the place into the ground.

Three strikes, three sets rule.

1st offense: 1 day ban
2nd: 2 day ban
3rd: 3 day ban

1st: 1 week
2nd: 2 weeks
3rd: 3 weeks

1st: 1 month
2nd: 2 months
3rd: Permanent ban and blacklist

No bias, no mercy. Two people start shit they get hit. One person harrasses another through PMs? Harraser gets put on the catapault.

It's harsh. And no doubt some people who didn't deserve to get put on a catapault would. But it's clean, it's fair, it's even. No room for bias of any kind. And of course people can always make an appeal if they care so much about it.

That depends on how many mirrors are in the vicinity.

This.

Circumstances are important but they fall by the wayside when you realise it's exceptionally difficult to quantify them, especially when the circumstances tend to just be random variables as opposed to actual factors mitigating a person's responsibility.

Justice ought be blind.

I like what I'm hearing from Sandtrap, as always, except for the bit about punishment for "harassing PMs." If you're receiving harassing PMs, block whoever's harassing you. In my opinion, PMs should ALWAYS be between the recipient and the sender and no one else. Mods should have no jurisdiction under a private setting. Unless in extreme circumstances where... I don't know, they're sending you child porn or something.

I personally find sites like these more entertaining when there are less rules, but then people always demand that mods get fired for not banning half the community when it gangs up on someone who's being a retard.

Figure this is better in Septagon, which kind of deals with Site Staff/site things in general.

Another mod can move it back if they feel otherwise.

All I'm saying is that the mods don't deserve to be criticized and called incompetent by every butthurt kid who got ganged up on by other people, usually for something they brought on themselves.

Yes, having no censor is nice, but it's not really much of a selling point. There should just be no censorship in general. It's kinda like saying, "Join our forum! We let you post!" It's not a seller, it's a... no brainer. I'm glad you have it, but... it also just has very little to do with moderation (that's more a policy).

Telling people not to fight is... again, just one of those things that mods... you know... SHOULD do.

Banning people only for being twats... Um... Okay. Not sure how to feel about that one, considering that a lot of people find ME insufferable and annoying, but I haven't even received so much as a warning since I came back.

But yeah, in general, I don't have a problem with any of the mods--they are too lenient, however, and that's what this is about.

No, I don't think they do. When I fight with someone, that's not me running down the community, is it? Is it really? What's more destructive? Me fighting with someone I hate, and maybe having three or four users gang up on me in the process, even in threads where I'm not even ASKING FOR TROUBLE...

or... someone who posts fifty threads a day that are about nothing--threads that add nothing to the discussion and only inflate the forum's popularity.

That's up in the air, but I think the answer is quite obviously the latter... To put a better perspective, challengerX started saying shit to me, like, "YEAH! HARASS HIM! SEE HOW HE LIKES IT!" I... don't care. If the entire forum was hellbent on harassing me, I wouldn't care. It wouldn't change my will to ameliorate the forum in whatever ways that I can.
