So how come they need 6+ seasons to film just one book in a long series?

I thought they were still adapting the first book (based on the title), and I was wondering why they were stretching it out so far. But it seems like every season is one book. Right?

Right?Sort of.Season 1 - A Game of ThronesSeason 2 - A Clash of KingsSeason 3 & 4 - A Storm of SwordsSeason 5 - A Feast for Crows and A Dance With DragonsSeason 6 - The Winds of Winter (?)AFfC and ADwD are two separate books but their stories are happening at the same time, just following different sets of characters. It's also possible for some seasons to include content from future or past books, for example Season 5 has certain parts that may be in the next book, and Season 6 needs to play catch up on certain plotlines from previous books. However, the stories of the book and the TV show are diverging rapidly from each other and can at this point be considered completely different stories. They'll both probably have the same ending and major plot landmarks but everything in between will be mostly separate.
