Wrong.

A border collie named Bramble lived to be 27 years old--longer than any dog in recorded history--and was fed a vegan diet from birth.

Get fucked.

Correlation =/= Causation

The exercise probably played more into the longevity of the dog's life than the diet
Also the owner was extremely protective of her dog and probably provided it more care than the average dog owner

Not to mention it's anecdotal.

The claim that dogs are omnivores is unproven, and Verb should be well aware that a single example is hardly compelling, especially when Bramble is the 5th oldest dog, and his life is undocumented except for a single article. Yes, it is possible for some dogs to live on a vegan diet; no, it is not the recommended diet, and must be strictly regulated and monitored, because dogs are not efficient at digesting plant-based protein and cannot digest cellulose without supplements. And of course, a vegan diet is completely impossible for a cat; they may live for a while, but it's a slow death by malnutrition.

The point is, if you're a die-hard vegan that cannot condone supporting eating meat in any way, you have no business adopting a dog or a cat. Get a vegan pet like a rabbit, rodents, lizards, or turtles.

Just out of curiosity, because I can't be assed to read the rest of the thread, how many vegans/vegetarians here would be fine with consuming meat in a non-industrialized society? That is, if meat products weren't mass produced, and we weren't wrecking the environment, would you eat a pork chop?
Nope, for the same exact reason I wouldn't eat a person.

no. i wouldn't see the point unless the animal was already dead, but i do that now. if my ma makes a steak i'm not going to tell her to throw it away; i have an obligation to make use of the animal's suffering.

So the main argument for not going planetary vegan is that we can't replace things fast enough, and it'd just end up being detrimental. Well, if we slowly replaced the amount of cattle with bugs (should eat similar food to the cattle), then we wouldn't have a problem, because the need for protein would be answered with these bugs. I reckon that you'd need less vegetables to get the same amount of protein that cattle give.
-It's healthier to eat bugs than it is to eat a steak
-You get more protein
-You use up less resources
-Less immoral to eat bugs than it is to eat los animales
Spoiler

Now as for the "we've fucked this planet beyond redemption"-claim, you should not be so pessimistic. We keep talking about problems, and the grim future, but what about the solutions? What about the milestones and growth in green? We need to look at history and how we've improved. We're coming up with better ways to deal with a heating Earth, or at least lowering carbon dioxide emissions- someone should do something about the already melted ice.
-We're getting more and more clean energy generators
-The People's Climate March has so far been the biggest march in mankind's history
-In May 2016 Britain was running on 100% clean energy for a few hours
-In the US there are about 150,000 coal workers, and 200,000 solar energy workers
YouTube

Addressing the OP:
If your dog is a bad breed like a pug, a bulldog, or daschund- dog, but "hund" means dog so it's redundant, but so is the Swedish name for a basketball basket; basketkorg (basket basket)- you should put it down. Don't give it a vegan diet, give it a bleach diet. As for having pets, you're not doing a human thing. Owning pets is a very primal thing to do, and you can't call yourself an animal friend, 'cause that's like calling yourself a protector of ladies (whiteknight faggot).

Very interesting, well thought out and reasonable counter argument. But it really seems like that we are past the point of no return.

I want to be proven wrong, badly. But those efforts are just not enough.

Also, solar energy is HIGHLY inefficient, and the production of solar panels is awful for the environment.

What we need, is nuclear fusion with deuterium. Done properly it is clean and essentially limitless.

Oh, also, sure, we've fucked up our planet, but beyond our ability to survive and prosper? I don't think so. Not from heating at least.

The problem with overpopulation can be solved in antinatalism, but who would do such a thing, right guys?

I don't know about poor countries, but rich countries are having less and less children.

The people that make up poor countries are the majority by a long shot. And they are breeding like rabbits, filling in the gaps for the first worlders and expanding the population.

We've reached about 1+ degree celsius. This is the tipping point, if we reach 2 that's the coral reef. We go higher than that and we might start to see apocalyptic results. 6 or 7 and the rainforests will be destroyed. Right now we're only seeing people dying in India due to heat (fuck india tbh, too many people in too much nothing), and asphalt melting.

Be concerned about countries in Africa, or other places with lower potential.

Places like India have a great potential to be like China due to how much education and engineers India is producing.

In the future all those engineers are gonna fill in the spots and do outsourcing to India, and India is gonna be richer, and then the rich won't want so many poor, so they'll implement laws against having so many children. It is the only reasonable thing to do.

As long as you have easy access to Saturn and the capability to both harvest large quantities of Helium-3 from its atmosphere (have fun getting a sizeable enough mass ratio that you're getting more than you use to get there and a Delta-V that is economically viable) and transport it home, then somehow get that Helium down Earth's gravity well and into your magitech He3-D fusion reactor.

Or the alternative, mining over 1million tonnes of lunar regolith for one measly tonne of useable Helium3. Harvesting it on Earth would be easier and cheaper.

Fusion is a long way off, and affordable fusion is pretty much fiction for now. Holding out for it won't do you much good.

OT: you people are both fucking idiots.

Animals can do whatever the fuck they want; they're our slaves. You know what happens to animals that don't get picked up? They get put down. We feed them steak; they eat it or do their own thing (dying or finding food themselves). Now if we feed them vegan food, then they can eat it, or they can die off or find their own food. Owning an animal is not like owning a child. When you buy a puppy you need to feed it what it needs, but when it's old enough to get food on its own it's on its own. You owe it to them to take care of them when they're that young because you took it upon yourself.

And to vegan pet owners, are you fucking dumb? Animals eat meat all the time. Why would you risk having to feed them meat just so you can snuggle with a dog? Doesn't matter that they can eat veggies, what matters is that you're forcing them. Wouldn't it be easier to just grow up and not get a pet?

I agree. I don't plan on getting a pet at all once I move out. Seeing as how I do live in a household with pets, though, it's still a relevant subject to me.

No, my pets don't live on vegan diets.

Looks like we're going for bust then. Getting a fusion reaction to put out more energy than it takes to get going and then making that sustainable is almost certainly not happening within our lifetime.

Fusion or bust, eh? You ever heard of the guy who defied the mafia, and chose to win the boxing match? He didn't care about his life, all he wanted was to win, then he could die, but they didn't kill him. They stopped him from living his life the way he wanted, so for 40 years he lived his life miserable; 40 years of living in a dead body. You might be willing to give it all in the moment, but you're gonna have to live with the loss for the rest of your life, so unless you're planning on dying any time soon, don't do it.

I'm not sure if what I had in mind was conveyed into text form, and I'm not gonna read what I wrote because I didn't put much thought into it, but basically, if you put all your eggs in one basket because you're okay with losing your eggs, then once you've lost it it's not game over, you just continue living your life without those eggs. At the time you'd be find with ending your life with the bet, but because it doesn't end after the fact, you're gonna live a sad life because you're never going to see those eggs again. If he puts all his trust in nuke fusion, and it doesn't happen, he's gonna be hopeless. I'm being a bit melodramatic because I'm in that mood, but there is some sagewisdom in this, and it's relevant.

Page three brings brilliance to the table. I don't wanna brag, but it's mostly produced by me.
