Let's use the Fox News special of justification for Guantanimo.

Through a series of events too complicated for this thread, you find yourself in a tent standing over a suspected terrorist. His friends planted a bomb somewhere and it's up to you to get him to talk.

Now, could you actually do the torture? I mean it is you putting the red hot metal up his ass, you're the one cutting his toes off etc...

Probably not. That's not my ballpark. There's only one circumstance that would ever put me into the situation of ever even considering torturing somebody.

If you want information with no massive urgency to the timescale then psychological interrogation >>> but if there is 24 hours to get it out of them or something and they don't feel like talking? I could see why it might be required.

Of course you wouldn't want to waste your time with Execution tier torture, but waterboarding would probably do the trick without too much mess. Or sticking them in a sensory deprivation chamber/anechoic one if it's available.

The short answer is no. Anyone wanting to see the other side of that question can check out an essay I did back in the day for a military ethics class. The easy argument is against torture (and that's what everyone was writing about) so I argued for it instead. I don't actually consider it morally justified; it was just a thought-experiment.

Keep in mind it's a college essay so I was required to discuss certain philosophies. If some references sound forced, it's because it was a syllabus requirement.
