Oh, hey.
Chally an i5 is perfect for gaming, and if you can get it unlocked it's preferable (the ones with i5-XXXXK)

AMD is more for budget builds for sub $1000 computers. Intel performs better across the board and is the most preferred route.

i7 is for more intensive things like editing and extensive Adobe usage.

i5's have 4 real cores, i7's have 8 cores (4 real, 4 virtual/digital). The extra power from an i7 is more for future proofing and brining like 5-7 more fps (unless your playing CPU intensive games like Total War games or Civ).

Hope that helps

This machine runs on an Intel i7 Quad Core Processor. It does an excellent job playing games at max or ultra settings or rendering.

AMD processors I've heard they slow down over time but perhaps they have improved now.

I prefer and use Intel. They have never failed me.

You could get an i5 but don't expect it to run everything at ultra settings. Just make sure its a fucking quad core and not a dual core. Dual core processors are very limited.

An i7 Quad Core is worth the price imo.

These are the specs on my gaming rig:

Spoiler
Intel i7 Quad Core Processor, Nvidia 550ti (needs to be upgraded now imo), 16GB RAM, 1TBHDD, Gigabyte motherboard.

That's my 25 cents on this. Do and get whatever chip and want that is best for you or that's in your budget.

Go with Nvidia/Intel combo, so it depends on the price range for thr GPU. Only go with AMD GPU's if you're on an efficiency budget. Right now a Nvidia GTX 970 will do you well with an i5.

I don't really know about graphics cards. How good of a graphics card do I need?

You only really need an i5.
Save your money and get a better graphics card.  I prefer the EVGA GTX cards.

Why do you prefer them?
Performance, low power, low noise, etc... They're pretty much the top-dog of Nvidia GPUs.

I concur, EVGA is best out of Nvidia's GTX line. The only reason I don't have one set up is because the monitors I plan on buying soon don't have Display Port slots, and the EVGA GTX 970 only comes with one HDMI and one DVI slot and I want a triple monitor set up.

everything in this thread is good, and i5 and a 970 will handle almost anything you throw at it. Also you don't need more than 8 gigs of ram, and if you can budget it i would highly recommend a SSD big enough to install your operating system on. I've had my computer for almost 3 years now and it starts up and shuts down just as fast as when i built it.

I'm getting a 250GB SSD and 3 1TB HDDs. My question is will I be able to install the entire OS onto the SSD and use my 1TB HDDs for everything else like installing games and programs like normal?

Yeah, the only thing that I didn't anticipate was how windows saves user config files for programs in the My Documents folder on the windows C drive. For example, I have steam and all those games installed on my 1tb HDD, but the config files for game settings and stuff are saved under C:\Users\"username"\Documents\. It hasn't been an issue so far, but that folder is currently 12 gigs on my ssd, which is only 120gb total. If you're getting a 250gb SSD you shouldn't have anything to worry about though

Do I have to do anything in the initial computer setup? Or whenever I install something?

you can change the location of My Documents to another drive under Properties > Location

I don't know if it's 100% necessary but I just disconnected all my drives except the SSD when I installed windows so I could make sure that it got installed there. Then once you have windows up and running, plug the drives back in, and it asks you what letter you want to use for identifying the drive (any letter other than C:). Then, when you go to install a new program, just change the first letter of the install directory when it asks you (because it will default to C:\Program Files). Just change the C to whatever letter you chose for the drive.

Yeah you could try that but some programs are stupid and look for their files in C anyway. That's what i've heard at least, and i don't really care to fix it now.
