Door, I'm curious as to why you have chosen Orthodoxy over other denominations? I myself am in denominational limbo; I have been looking at the teachings of different denominations and trying to decide which best fits.

The Orthodox notion of Theosis first and foremost. It is desirable to me and I find it more practically and theologically impressive than the idea of Christianity as a way to get into eternal fun and hedonism land in the sky. The idea of Christianity as a path to get closer to God is extremely appealing to me personally, as a way to both fulfill AND transcend my egoistic and self-serving nature. By seeking salvation and closeness to God, I am able to act in my self-interest while also working toward escaping and transcending my inherently self-serving and sinful nature.

Aside from that, I find the worship style much more spiritually uplifting and engaging than the sermons and praise bands I grew up on. The saturday night Vespers services in particular always make my heart sing.

From a practical standpoint, I find the use of iconography and veneration of saints helpful. It helps add a kind of "system" or structure to my faith, and I often look to the stories of saints for inspiration. When you worship in an Orthodox church, you are surrounded not only by your fellow Christians on earth, but by all of the saints and angels there have ever been.

I also respect the Orthodox Church's claims to legitimacy, although I am more skeptical about it than most converts probably are. I am also very supportive of the use of tradition (big T and small t tradition) as a guide when interpreting and practicing Christianity.

Consider Orthodoxy. Visit an Orthodox service (vespers is probably better than liturgy, if you like a smaller and more simple service. Liturgy is usually bigger, more grand and crowded). I'm not going to tell you it's the best kind of Christianity and you're dumb for not joining, that's really up to God to say, but it is definitely worth a try.

Actually I'm an atheist because to put quote, I don't believe in any deity and I never will. I don't come from a religious household.

I also respect the Orthodox Church's claims to legitimacy, although I am more skeptical about it than most converts probably are. I am also very supportive of the use of tradition (big T and small t tradition) as a guide when interpreting and practicing Christianity.

This is actually the reason I didn't convert to Orthodoxy. Their claim that they're the historical True Church is indefensible, and the extreme amount of tradition (AKA unwritten, unbiblical hearsay) is exactly what turned Catholicism into some weird pseudo-Christian religion. I really respect Orthodoxy for their focus on providing a reverent, traditional experience, but their exclusivity isn't justified.

I've actually stopped going to church since I've moved to the South, because it's either fire-and-brimstone Baptists or barely-Christian non-denominational rock bands and motivational speaking.
