Sony has been pretty clear on what they'll allow. No origin stories and the Sinister Six are out.

I can't believe they're jumping right to Carnage. For characters that aren't as well known as Spider-Man and Superman, you kinda need an origin story, m8.

I dunno, Venom was a pretty popular character since the day he entered the comics. He almost immediately got his own spin-off, and the whole "symbiote suit" arc has been present in every single Spider-Man show, comic reboot, or movie series (except Amazing, since it got canned before that) released since. Carnage as well is pretty damn popular, appearing in most Spider-man shows and Spider-man continuities as well.

Besides, origin stories are insanely played out nowadays. It's not hard to introduce Cletus Kasady to people either; he's like Venom, except with more crazy and wanton murder; and he can morph his entire body instead of just his suit.

And while Venom is a Spidey villain, his main shtick is that he hates evil with a passion and hates Spidey even more (because the symbiote hates Spiderman for rejecting him, and Brock hates him for ruining his life). He's been a comic protagonist for decades, I'm not surprised that they're giving him the same opportunity on the silver screen. I hope it's successful enough to get to the Agent Venom/ Venom: Space Knight part.

The actual "space knight" portion sucked, but I'm a softy for "abandoned on a strange planet/have to work together" story. The Guardians through start of Space Knight was really fun.

I wonder how many times the spinoff movies are going to get rebooted.
