I'm not talking about big authors or series; obviously things like Harry Potter or a Stephen King book are going to be almost universally liked. I'm talking about books that you picked up on a whim or suggestion and turned out to be great.

Some examples for me:
-The Martian
-Ender's Game (though I'd argue that by now it's a very popular book and shouldn't be included)
-The Name of the Wind

Looking for some new books to pick up now that I finished my slog through ASoIAF.

the curious case of the dog in the nighttime was really fun to read, it's written from the perspective of a teenager with some sort of autism

You're right on Enders game. Read it back in highschool and loved it.

I also love both of Cody Lundins books.

World War Z was a brilliant book, pity the film was eh but that's the way it goes.

I've been reading the Dune series lately and it's really bloody good, easily made itself into a favourite to surpass most 40k series >_>

Homer's Iliad

I'm not trying to sound pretentious, it is genuinely one of the most entertaining books I've ever read.

I read it for Greek civ

Goes REALLY well with Mastodon and Baroness' music

I think listening to any music while reading :

"But whenever he saw a commoner and found him shouting, he would strike them with the sceptre and berate him.."

"So he spoke, and then used the sceptre to beat him on the back and shoulders..."

would be perfect. Probably the funniest passages I've read, just picturing Odysseus running around slapping people with a golden stick, brilliant stuff.

Excuse me, I'm full of dog poison
Anything by Kurt Vonnegut, his style of writing is excellent.

Same with Chuck palahniuk.
