An illness? No. An illness is something that can be captured or cured. The reason I detest Autism Speaks is that they focus more on those who have to deal with the autistic people more than helping the person with autism to cope. Their dialect treats those with autism as some sort of bane, that the families who have an autistic child are without hope. One of the leaders of Autism Speaks gave a speech about how she was tempted to hurl herself off a bridge with her autistic daughter. She gave this speech IN the presence of her daughter. They are responsible for the atrocity known as “I am Autism”, a short film produced by the same person who directed the 3rd Harry Potter movie (yes, really) and features an ominous voice saying things like “I am autism…I know where you live…I work faster than pediatric AIDS, cancer, and diabetes combined…I will make sure your marriage fails.”

They create a stigma that makes it far more difficult for actual autistic people like myself to be heard, because we are portrayed by them as being inhuman, unempathetic and without emotion. They also don't have any people with autism on their board. You'd think that as an organization that supposedly wants to raise awareness and help for those with the disorder, they'd have some insight from somebody who actually has it. But no, they care more about being thought of as "the good guys" rather than actually helping people.
