ESTERO, Fla.- A popular company among college students called, “I’m Shmacked” is headed to Florida Gulf Coast University. The company visits college campuses around the country, throws a huge party and films it. They say it helps high school students make college decisions. But others worry it could damage reputations.“I think it’s great for the university. I think it’s great that they’re coming in and, you know, they’re going to turn up, we’re going to turn up,” said Sam Camargo.Camargo is one of many FGCU students who has already made his plans to attend what’s anticipated to be the biggest party of the year.“I’m Shmacked” is coming to Estero for FGCU’s ‘Week of Welcome’ this August. The company made the announcement Tuesday on Twitter. Within minutes, the reactions came pouring in on social media.“People are going to know about the university. It’s going to bring more recognition to the school,” said Camargo. Some students say that recognition could damage the school and their future careers. One incoming FGCU freshman says “the negative attention that comes along with ‘I’m Shmacked’ coming to FGCU isn’t something to be too excited about. Their brand and videos promote rape culture, sexism, abuse of drugs and alcohol.”Another student says, “sorry but I’m Schmacked is just a lawsuit waiting to happen. Everyone will be drunk, and no one will be able to give proper consent.”In past campus visits, some parties have gotten out of hand.In Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, 35 students were arrested in one night and in Delaware, a riot broke out.During an interview with the Business Insider, the founder even admits that almost every show has incidents. We reached out to FGCU officials to see what they had to say. They told us it’s up to the students whether or not they participate and will treat it as any other off campus party and not interfere.
