Are lithium fumes toxic?

Let's say, for example, that my friend had a roll of lithium metal. Let us then say that he inserted it into some water.

Let's assume this caused it to spontaneously combust and create a large cloud of smoke.

Are the fumes caused by this combustion dangerous to inhale?

Lithium is corrosive and requires special handling to avoid skin contact. Breathing lithium dust or lithium compounds (which are often alkaline) initially irritate the nose and throat, while higher exposure can cause a buildup of fluid in the lungs, leading to pulmonary edema. The metal itself is a handling hazard because of the caustic hydroxide produced when it is in contact with moisture. Lithium is safely stored in non-reactive compounds such as naphtha.

So I won't die? My nose and throat were feeling weird earlier but now I feel OK. (24 hours later).

If you inhaled a lot of it and fluid formed in your lungs you could have respiratory failure.

Yes. Don't panic if you breathed it in, as long as the exposure time was short. Drink some water.

You should probably already know that Lithium should not come into contact with skin.

It was only for like 20 seconds.

It's chemistry. Don't panic but assume all unknowns are very dangerous for safety.
