Any weapon can be very dangerous dependent on the user. That doesn't mean you go around banning bats, knives, automobiles and nearly every other object in existence just because some people happen to be irresponsible.

Some happen to enjoy owning these types of weapons. Not only for protection, but simply recreation. Not to mention, it has its uses in the real world over other types of weapons.

The only point of a gun that large is to kill a lot of people in a small amount of time.

Eh.Automatic fire is more for suppressing an enemy than actually killing them. If you can keep the enemies head down you can get a team out to flank them and neutralize them. That's one of the big reasons why a SAW gunner is in every rifle squad. They put enough volume of fire downrange to let the other guys get into a position to kill the bad guys. Even when you move onto Machineguns like the M240, M60, etc... It's mostly down to suppressing the enemy rather than killing them. I see no civilian practical purpose for Full retard other than it being fun and awesome. I'd never own a full retard gun because I'd never afford the ammo. Though of the Hughes amendment was repealed and NFA took a nose dive and all new rifles were select fire, I guess I'd have one. I'd much rather be pumping rounds downrange in semi-automatic. I care more about shot placement over volume of fire.

...Well, yeah. A gun that can fire half a dozen bullets in one second is probably more likely to kill somebody than a gun that fires just one bullet per trigger-squeeze.
Machine guns are actually designed for the purpose of killing people efficiently and quickly.
It's designed to put a shitload of rounds downrange to make the enemy stay in cover so that your men can move forward and then kill the enemy with their semi-auto AR's.
