Just wondering for whom I'll say "I knew that person when they posted an a backwater forum. Man the things they said are embarrassing in hindsight..."

I have ideas, but they wouldn't bring in money so they're pretty much doomed to stay unfinished.
Not expecting myself to write any because of this.

What's your story about if you're working on one?

I was, but it's pretty much scrapped. I came up with the idea when I was younger, and as I got older, I realized that the story just wouldn't have panned out. I have many ideas for stories floating around in my ahead right now--a couple of which are dystopian futures where 1.) earth gets taken over by a race of organisms much stronger than us, and they form a civilization almost identical to ours--except they eat human flesh, which I would use to put the whole meat-eating thing into perspective in support of veganism, and 2.) a land of gods, all of whom are designated to reign over and control their own universe, which is represented by a small microcosm that they can enter and exit at will, kind of like a holodeck--except they're all evil and sadistic. They create sentient life and torture it for fun--and one god (maybe at least two gods) begin to snap out of their conditioning and discover that the other gods are evil and must be killed somehow.

The latter being a newer idea which I'm still trying to shape up before I write about it. I don't see a point in writing a story that isn't obviously philosophically charged in favor of something that I believe. Maybe I should just write nonfiction--a philosophical treatise, perhaps.

The story I have in mind for my fantasy universe is becoming less relevant to my life as time goes on.
Why wouldn't your story have panned out?

I also decided to make mine philosophically charged partially in favor of what I really think. I started writing essays about all the points I wanted to address and that would provide the thematic basis for determining plot events.

Well, it was mainly about a troubled kid who, after delving in obscure philosophical concepts for awhile, becomes a solipsist--an extreme form of nihilism where you believe you are the only thing that exists, and everything else is virtual or illusory. He disconnects from his friends and family as a result, and the story would've jumped back and forth from the kid's perspective and a family member's perspective (the mother, perhaps).

The trouble with that plot is that there's no argument against solipsism--so there would be no way to resolve the conflict in an interesting way. It would have to be a different kind of ending, and one that I'm not sure I'd be comfortable with writing and sharing with the world. Maybe with a different story, but not this one.

There's material there, but it wouldn't have panned out because the conflict is so centralized on the theme of solipsism.

Hmm...
I wrote some stuff (it's like 100,000 words iirc) and posted it in a place and it got pretty good reviews, but it is in no way a novel or anything that would make money.

Where'd you post it?

If it weren't for money issues, would you try to circulate it more?

I'd love to share some stuff I've written here, but I'd have to make sure it's in tip-top shape first.

It wasn't about the money. I wrote for fun, but I just don't have much free time anymore.

How much editing do you do before you typically share with other people?

Obviously, it varies, and I'm never usually satisfied. Normally, I come to a point where I share it with a couple friends who I can trust to give me some criticism, do a final revision, and then share it publicly.

My friends don't give me criticism really. For the things I'm really interested in I just revise it until I'm thoroughly sick of looking at it. maybe not the best approach.

ye, it centered around an industrial age type alien civilization whose members are infected by a virus with implied hive mind sentience.

The story grappled with which being was really in control of the world around them, it was kind of like a mystery sci fi deal with a grounded plot that would ultimately funnel into a broader narrative.

I basically wanted the reader to create a parallel perspective while reading... but it kinda went to shit.

trying to establish stuff like that is pretty hard to plan around too, in conjunction with everything already happening in a plot. Messy work man, messy work.

yup, I think I can still do something with it if I put the time in tbh, I just need to get the core story down in order to mold it around the world I've envisioned.

For the longest time I had no way to process the themes I wanted, the world I was making, and the personal insight I wanted to elaborate on. That struggle of having a world before the story and asking "how the hell does it fit in this universe?"
After like two years of aimless writing, scrapping, and conceptualizing I know I probably have to go from Themes>Essays>Characters>World>Plot>Scenes>Writing>Revision

His eyebrows sparkling, his white beard hangs down to his chest. The thatched mats, spread outside his chise, spread softly, his splendid attos. He polishes, cross-legged, his makiri, with his eyes completely absorbed.

He is Ainu.

The god of Ainu Mosir, Ae-Oine Kamuy, descendant of Okiku-Rumi, He perishes, a living corpse. The summers day, the white sunlight, unabrushed, ends simply through his breath alone.
In my spare-spare time I like to write. I plan on eventually working a manuscript out and sending it off to publishers.
