Will people give you actual money in exchange for x amount of y cryptocurrency, or is the value only theoretical?

You can sell crypto for real money. You can use crypto for certain services and even in some actual stores. The value is no less or more theoretical than the value of most things.

I’ve made about $3500 with bitcoin, would’ve made a shitload more if i kept everything i had since april or so. Right now i have a good amount in btc eth and lte just to hold on to for a year or 3 etc to see where it goes. I’m not too worried about losing it because I’m young and i figure i can always make more money you know? I’ve always had the mindset that money will always come idk it’s weird I also play sometimes with quick buying/dumping stuff like NEO or iota but those are risky because I’m not smart enough to understand the technology i sorta just go by intuition and trends i read on forums. Have made a few hundred like this though
It's only backed by only speculative value; if people got bored of it, prices will be 0 and coinbases will disappear, leaving the rest of crypto users with no way to even access their worthless CCs.
I'm only going to touch it once it becomes commodity money (which it can become, given its programmable nature).

The thing is people by itself interested in not getting bored of it, because they will lose money.
i wish people would get bored of real money
