I have a science fiction universe consisting of over 180 documents. That counts right?
Yeah, that certainly counts. Do you have any short stories or longer novel length work conceptualized?

I have the plot for a larger novel down but it's just eh trying to write single characters. I much prefer actually world-building.
I think that's where any person expressing ideas from a personal universe should start. It's a fantastic way to establish how the world works and what's in it so I can fit details together more easily for trying to tell the story of what happens at some point in time in that universe.

Well I have the timeline of 400AD-2700AD done (From when the first species achieve space travel to the 'present day') and have every weapon and vehicle and their respective manufacturers done. Also, I has the detailed writers do every species and I'm also making two languages used by alien factions to do proper wording in writing. Te technology is a slow process because I'm researching physics to make sure everything tht happens is possible in physics. The military structure and ranks for the humans are done and are a WIP for aliens.

I have a lot of the ideas down, it's just actually writing it all.

I figure I'll just drop this here since this is basically the only writing thread around. I always like to try and push my limits with writing. And I know my strengths. Good with characters. I'm good at writing and creating my own stuff. And, lately, I've been delving into little bits and pieces of fanfiction.

Because with fanfics, it's an established universe. And not my own self generated stuff. I can create the rules and limits as I see fit with my own stuff. And I make these rules and limits based around what I want to write. Consider them as static rules. Moveable to fit what I want to make.

But a fanfic has locked rules. Rules that you can't break and move to make what you want. I always like to bend the rules, just a little bit. But the closer you stay to the source material, the harder, and more entertaining it is. More fun.

Now, I've pushed stuff a step further. I asked a friend if they'd like to see me write something. So they gave me a character of theirs. Not only that, but a persona.

So.

This is, a fucking trip and a half for me. My strength lies in characters. And in order to do what I do, I set myself down in the shoes of said character.

I write as if that particular character was there talking, and I was an observer. Dialogue becomes real, personalities feel real.

So, setting my shoes down into this character, this persona, of a person I know, and partially understand, and can see how they work normally, is basically, like some kind of inception for me.

This is like some strange ass drug trip.

It's weird. But it's fun, and new at the same time.

And most of all, I didn't think I could pull it off. I went from 15 pages last night to 45 this morning. I can see every little detail and I know how this story plays out from start to finish.

I don't normally do New Year's Resolutions (well, I did last year, I guess), but this year, I want to make it a point to start reading more. A couple of people in my life have noted how pathetically unread I am for someone who likes to spend time contemplating lofty ideas and articulating them in lofty ways, and it's kinda been getting to me lately.

So, I picked up a bunch of stuff relevant to my interests...
Les Misérables, Gone Girl, 1984, Animal Farm, Brave New World, A Clockwork Orange, and The Catcher in the Rye.

I'd like further recommendations. What are you guys reading right now?

Probably could've made a whole new thread, but I didn't want to risk it not being good enough for Serious, and having it moved to the cesspool that is the Flood.

Drop Catcher, it's bad. replace with a Nabokov work of your choice.

If you're a fan of fantasy, anachronisms, witty humor, and Arthurian legend the Once and Future King would be a good choice.
Invisible Man by Ralph Ellison is an excellent story on identity.

Define "bad". I recognize it's kinda polarizing.

Mary, or King, Queen, Nave would also be acceptable choices.

So. Rather than make a pity me thread and waste space. I'm going to write. I feel horrid tonight. Really. Fuck me. So. Here goes.

Through sunken eyes I stare.
Every passing day, more hair.
Drifts away on empty air.
My mind tries to fight, but it is not right.
I lose my ground, just like pounds.
Skin is pale, starting to fail.
This winter is hard, leaving me scarred.
I fight from all sides, like standing up to tides.
I falter and fail, a body going frail.
The outside rots, the inside clots.
I struggle to stand, fight my shaking hand.
I try my best, to fight this mess.
But I will not lie, I feel like I will die.
My time seems done, like I have none.
Every day I fall, and soon I will crawl.
All I ask, behind this mask.
A brave face to all, why fight at all?
But most of all, who will be the first to fall?
The world I see, or the cancer in me?

I've been tossing around an idea for a musical about gay terrorists. Might sit down and try to get an outline going one day, but I don't feel inspired enough to do it yet. I've also wanted to try my hand at a number of other forms of literature.. notably, and most probably, stream of consciousness. My thoughts are often loose and disorganized so collecting them could be a decent way to find inspiration. At the risk of sounding like every other overly egotistical guy ever, I've always wanted to try my hand at creative writing, but I've never felt like I have anything of worth to offer. So, until I find inspiration, I remain apathetic and only marginally interested.

The book of WWZ is surprsingly thought provoking as to how a society would continue/ be set up after a zombie war. May not exactly what you're wanting but it actually goes into some pretty deep concepts.

I wasn't aware that I was quick. Those moments are rare.

But, usually what I do is, I think of the premise of the story, and start writing. As I write, the idea shapes itself and I continue onwards, and I just keep going. I'm so sharp with this that usually, I get the feel of what I want in one shot with minimal editing.

Essentially, when I write, I just let everything flow and I see where it takes me. My speed is usually determined by how healthy my head is at the time, the drive and will to see the story come to life, and what particular mood the story is founded in.

When I actually get free time, I have a review for a friend's story in the barrel, along with a folder of 22 different story premises/vague plot maps [I like to chart the events of my stories into "maps" especially when they involve time manipulation or SR] that I've been working on. Basically before uni started I wrote like a maniac, so I have quite a bit of stuff that I'm "writing."

I have no idea if you're one to be into science fiction, but I'd recommend looking into Stephen Baxter and some of his work, like the Xeelee Sequence and Manifold series. The Forever War is a good book, and the Ender Game books are good (Speaker for the Dead, Xenocide, and Children of the Mind).

Brave New World is a great book and is frighteningly accurate. Catcher is fucking shit though.

Knock knock Espira. I'm in a writing mood.

You were the first and the last
Through days of gloom in this rough past
You were an unexpected spark
And became a friend in the dark
You listened in silence and stillness
But spoke when needed, help through illness
I was no longer alone
Didn't have to fight on my own
You gave me my space
Let me think and find my place
I never intended for this
To make things so amiss
I wish I was stronger
A will to last longer
But I can't fight what I see
A friend and so much more to me
I am not right
Try so hard as I might
I can't fight my heart
So now we must part
You will always be a friend and more
Which is why I leave open the door
But I know you well
And know you'll do swell
So this road comes to an end
I wish you farewell my friend
You helped me reverse
Because you were the first
I said my dues and died
Yet got up in stride
And now I face my impasse
Because you were the last
