I wish Bungie would've kept this characterisation instead of taking the lazy route and saying "it's so the player can feel like they are chief" which everyone knows is a bullshit excuse for bad and lazy writing. So glad 343 is going away from this. I mean, if they'd had made te protagonist have complete customisation (Noble 6) then it would have been excusable, but he has a voice in cutscenes, so you're only supposed to pretend to be the character when it's convenient for them.Though when you get to the flood, you'll wonder what chief was thinking when facing the Gravemind and delving into High charity in H2/3.

I liked the books.And I liked the contrast of character in the games, it's like we play as the business end of Chief then read his thoughts.
