What I know is that the unexpected is at the heart of all comedy. I don't know why people enjoy it, but they do, and Challenger's post has that. You can't argue against something you don't like just by saying, "why does anyone like this?", 'cause you could keep asking "why?" to each successive question like a two year old. You weren't looking for a psych 101 lesson, though, you were looking for what redeeming value this joke could possibly have. I told why it meets all the qualifications for being a joke, but I guess it was a mistake to answer the questions of someone who I should've known is an expert. So, please, Verbatim, tell me what you don't like about the joke. And remember, just repeating that it isn't even a joke isn't an answer, since we've covered that ground already.

I really don't know what more you want, though. What more is the essence of a joke than the techniques being used? I don't know exactly what it is about our expectations being twisted that's so amusing to us, but if that's your issue with the joke, than you should have an issue with a lot more jokes than this one. Probably all of them. Maybe you are just too smart for humor, but there's no reason to give Challenger a hard time about it.
