Not only that, but at that time 99% of the species he killed weren't endangered yet. The animals he killed were sent to the Smithsonian, I believe, and contributed greatly to scientific knowledge. Furthermore, Roosevelt was a major conservationist, and it was he who established the national parks.

Another interesting fact about Jackson pertaining to beating his would-be assassin with a cane. When his assassin came out only feet away and fired his gun at Jackson it misfired, so he pulled out a second gun and misfired as well (the chances of both misfiring is 125,000 to 1), during the investigation afterwards, the pistols used were found to be in perfect working order and there should have been no reason for misfiring at all.
