You didn't pay attention to jack shit clearly. He talked with this girl and he had the hots for another girl, and he regrets ignoring her. He didn't know what he wanted at the time and after that happened he deeply regrets it.

what he's saying is that class didn't actually do anything wrong. the girl would have died if he had accepted her proposal or not. he's displacing his frustration at an admittedly tragic situation into guilt. it's all a part of the process.
