Acceptable mileage on a used car?

For a car around £1,000.

I've been looking at some VW Golf MK4s, and the mileage is usually around 100,000. Kind of expected for a car thatt's 10 years old really.

VW's are pretty reliable tbh so you should be fine even with the 100k miles

The ones I've been looking at claim to have been taken care of and with full service history.

I guess as long as it hasn't been thrashed about by some bellend, then 100k mileage should be fine.

Exactly, this is your first car I assume? Most of my friends first cars were all pretty much around that mark and none of them had issues with maintenance.

Shouldn't be anything to worry about.
150k with no service history is meh
200k I start to worry
300k and you're just buying it for the frame and body.

The rule of thumb for mileage is people usually drive 10-20k miles per year. Under 10k/yr is great, over 20k/yr I would avoid.

Sounds good, at 100k, that car should be ready with everything getting changed. But, lower mileage is better.

my rule is 15k miles per year on the car on average, but never go over 250k unless the engine is replaced or is a ford engine(seriously, ford engines are insanely long lasting), so it looks like you're good dude.
