Look at all these shitty fucking sequels. Pirates 5? Hancock 2? Fast and Furious fucking 8?

Stop going to these movies. Even if you're kind of interested in them in a car-accident-witness sort of way, just don't. Pirate them or watch them on Netflix or Redbox if you feel morally obligated to financially support the downfall of cinema.

Make 2017 the year you stop supporting reboots, sequels, remakes, movies based off of kids' toys, comic book movies, and generally unoriginal ideas. Go see weird indie movies, low-budget character dramas, and original films.

Most superhero movies are the worst to support right now. They're basically just 2 hours of exposition for the next movie with a lackluster plot to fill in what's left. It's pretty much a perpetual ad.

Appaloosa (2008) is good but unrecognized, and in '07 as well was the Assassination of Jessie James.

But what did we have before that? In the public eye there's this giant gap between Eastwood's Unforgiven (1992) and Brokeback Mountain (2005) where the genre might as well have stopped existing.
