No, marriage is actually completely useless. Why do I need a certificate in order to show other people that I love someone? It has nothing to do with being pessimistic.

Because outside of the tax benefits, etc. that Kinder listed, adoption is one of the few ways LGBT couples can adopt children (Jointly) in most states. Also included...

In the event your spouse dies, the marriage certificate is required to automatically inherit possessions, housing, etc.
In the event your significant other is from another country, you need the marriage certificate in order to easily apply for them to join you in America.
Unmarried couples are not protected against having to testify against each other in judicial proceedings
Unlike spouses, unmarried partners are usually not considered next of kin for the purposes of hospital visitation and emergency medical decisions.

The list goes on. So, yes. Marriage provides tax benefits. But that certificate is required for so many things that we consider basic.
