Then I guess the events of Cloverfield happened, the girl got stir crazy and tried to leave.I hope that isn't the sole premise of the movie, movies set in only a few scenes needs really good acting and/or lots of actors, and I can't say for sure they have either yet. Or, it's a good trailer that is keeping everything under wraps, like trailers should.
Didn't they kill the monster in the 1st film?
Not what I was expecting. Not found footage either, looks meh just based on the trailer. Though, I always wanted to know more about Cloverfield lore, assuming it even is a sequel.

If it's a sequel to Cloverfield then one of the possibilities I can think of right off the go is the fact that the monster had parasites on it, which fell off of it and proceeded to spread all over the city almost completely unchecked.Even if the military eventually killed the big critter those small parasitic ones might have caused some serious clean up issues and long term problems like the plague they carried.
