This is the penis of an echidna.


Many mammals have penises that are more impressive than human penises, however, the echidna takes the cake.
Despite many larger animals having large penises, smaller animals have more interesting penises.

Some are corkscrews, some have barbs, and some, like the echidna, have multiple heads.
I have never really understood the reason for this, and would be interested in being educated about penises.

Are there any resident experts on penises?

From doing a bit of research it seems Echidnas possess a reptilian hemipenis on account of unique ancestry and utilize it in a strange case of sperm competition.
Echidnas are one of five monotremes species (primitive mammal species) displaying archaic traits from reptile ancestors (for example, they retain a cloaca commonly seen in reptiles), thus the reptilian hemipenis. However, Echidnas are extraordinarily special because they have two hemipenises.
Like reptiles, Echidnas mate using one part of their multipenis, such that the other can be saved for another round of copulation. Only two heads are used, the other two aren't inflated (apparently the penis won't fit if all four are inflated). Currently scientists think the four they possess function on account of sperm competition with other males. Female Echidnas are promiscuous, having multiple males follow and mate with them (I read articles citing males awoke earlier in winter and mated with still hibernating females successfully despite lowered body temperatures).

Female echidnas have a 2-way split reproductive tract. Only 2 heads of the male are "Active" at one time, to properly get dat braad pregnant but not pregnant because echidnas lay eggs. It switches active sides of it's penis between mating sessions.
