A better analogy would be that they're shaming someone for the color of shirt that they're wearing.I'd say shaming someone for a form of expression that has zero influence on literally anything is a lot more selfish.

The issue isn't so much advising people against getting one, but when people take the moral high ground and use statements like in the OP to try and justify some judgement against getting a tattoo/people with tattoos. I experienced the same thing with a couple of people when I made it known I want a motorcycle over a car.
