Just read the Hodor thing came from GRRM. I'm interested to see how it plays out in the book though.

But...oh my God I'd be lying if I said I didn't tear up those last 10 minutes.  I've seen theories of Bran pretty much being a time traveler, so I'm not too upset at writing him in to "create" Hodor.  Still, I was pretty upset.

It just felt really contrived. Bran just randomly hops over to check out the Others' army, then gets grabbed, which is apparently some sort of mark, and that mark somehow nullifies all of the Children's magic, and I guess they were planning on Bran doing that because their army was already there...and yada yada yada, stuff happens, Bran and the three-eyed crow are just hanging out in past Winterfell for some reason, and Bran can warg into Hodor and use greensight at the same time, and there's a door in the tree apparently, etc. The whole scene was just kind of goofy and nonsensical.

Don't get me wrong, I enjoyed the episode. I'm really looking forward to getting it right in the books, though.

Apparently "Hold the Door" will actually be Hodor's story arc in the books.  So, we'll see if either this stays in the books, or George will just re-write things because the show already revealed that scene.

For anyone that thinks this is what's going to happen in the books, I'd just like to point out that this was a very intricate scene where each part basically depends on the previous to be able to happen but I don't think would be possible in the books. You may remember that they said the same exact thing after Stannis burned Shireen last season, but if you take a step back and think about it, there's not really any plausible way to get from point A to point B.

First off, the Night King is a character that has only appeared in the show and doesn't seem to be in any way related to the Night's King from the books, which GRRM has heavily implied is just a legend and nothing more. Second, Bran's greenseer powers allow him to see through weirwood trees' history. He can't just manifest his body walking around any random place. This means that the Night King couldn't just grab his arm and put a curse on him or whatever. From here, the sequence basically falls apart.

The books have also never mentioned that Hodor was once intelligent, which would be strange considering most of the people who would have known him as a child would have been around, including his great-grandmother Old Nan. I also don't see how you can get "Hodor" from "hold the door". Maybe if he was saying "Holdor" I'd have an easier time buying it. Also if the Others never put a curse on Bran then they would presumably never have to flee from the cave. And why would there be a wooden door at the end of a cave tunnel anyway?

I really doubt that George will give Bran the ability to warg into people throughout time. It's doesn't fit with what we know about Bran's powers and becomes paradoxical fast. Why wouldn't he just warg into Jaime so that he never throws him out of a tower?

I think this was just a clever way to tie up a lot of loose ends and claiming it came from George is just to try to justify butchering the canon so hard. I think we need to drop the idea that the show will end the same as the books because we're at the point where basically every storyline holds no semblance to the source material and even history and lore is being changed. I actually do prefer this "fanfiction" writing honestly and this episode was my favorite since Hardhome.

I don't recall them specifically saying, "Stannis burns Shireen", only Shireen is burnt.  Since D&D were not fond of Stannis and seemed to want to fast forward his storyline so we can get to Bastardbowl, they just had his family travel with him and die, since that seems to be the ultimate fate of House Baratheon.  In the books, it's theorized that Mel will burn Shireen in an attempt to resurrect Stannis  but instead bring Jon out of his coma, and I don't think D&D wanted that kind of moral dilemma on a TV show's hero, which I understand.  So, if GRRM's notes revealed Hodor's secret, they wrote it in for some delicious, de-fucking-licious TV drama.

And since Wilas was a common stable boy, pretty much a peasant, no one probably gave a shit about someone suffering a seizure and suffering permanent brain damage.

As for Wilas turning into Hodor, it's speculated that Bran did try to connect to present Hodor, but since he was in the past and connected to the weirwood network, he ended up linking Hodor to Wilas, making the lad experience his own death and fucking him up for life.

The Night's King grabbing his arm...eh that can be summed up to magical plot convenience, but I reckon it was to actually set up the destruction of the Wall.  There's rumors someone, Benjen or Coldhands, helps Meera and Bran next episode so they could get to the Wall.  However, Bran is still marked by the Night's King, so if the Night's King wants to go through the Wall, he'll go through the fucking Wall as he damn well pleases.

I feel like I should actually watch the episodes before I read these threads but honestly reading them makes me glad that I don't.

I honestly wouldn't be surprised if dabid or dannyboi turns out to be matt ward in disguise.

Also, from 2014:

Read this right after I typed up my rant. We'll see I guess. The context would have to be completely different. It just seems like a shitty fan theory to me.

Thoroughly enjoyed that episode. Teared up a bit at the end. Also some obvious foreshadowing of the wall coming down, sweet.

You either die a hero or live long enough to become Mythic..
I wonder how Bran and Meera are even gonna get away now. Meera is gonna have a hard time dragging Bran around and the White Walkers are literally right there.

It's theorized Coldhands or Benjen is going to turn up in the next Bran scene to help them.

But still, Holddadoor can only hold it for so long. Maybe buying them a minute or two before the horde comes for them.
Plus he is marked by the Night's King correct? Which means he can hunt them down from anywhere.
Finally, they are REALLY far away from the Wall. So they would have to do more deus ex machina shit for them to already be at the Wall next episode....but that is probably going to happen.
