Because every other "civilized" group of people aren't guilty of horrific forms of torture.
Also, it seems more like Ancient Greek propaganda against the Persian Empire than reality.
They might've been comparitively civilised for the age at the time when compared to everybody else. But really, it's like that with all cultures. They exceeded in some areas, and fell short in others.A lot like politicians, really.
still better than the fucking Spartans (Spartans are still badass though)

The spartans had to train to be ready to keep the slaves in line because the slaves always had to do all the work because the spartans had to train to be ready to keep the slaves in line because the slaves always had to do all of the work because the spartans... and so on.

Obviously there's a little more wiggle room than "You don't feel like working, okay, we'll just kill you." Now it's just, "Don't feel like working? Go homeless and lose access to all the pretty shit."Maybe that's why american pop culture worships slave holders.Huh, go figure.
I honestly think the movie 300 gave society a boner for them again.

The class system will always be a thing, no matter what form of government and society we're under.
The Persians got beat by Alexander the Gay.
If I saw a spartan walking down the street I wouldn't even greet him
