Is this a product of our society, or a primal thing? edit: Societal thing. The kid didn't even know what diamonds were, and showed me fake diamonds (plastic/something that doesn't look like diamonds).

The only value in diamonds are that they're hard; they represent time, and effort; investment in the receiver; as well as that they do in fact sparkle.
