The European Parliament will vote Wednesday on legislation that some argue could change the internet as we know it. The proposed law, Article 13, would require large platforms like Facebook and Reddit to scan content before it's posted online and take down material they think could be stolen. That means memes, which often use pictures that are subject to copyright, could be targeted, the Independent reports.

In an open letter to the president of the European Parliament, tech experts and prominent figures -- including World Wide Web inventor Tim Berners-Lee and Wikipedia founder Jimmy Wales -- said Article 13 presented an "imminent threat" to the future of the internet.

"By requiring Internet platforms to perform automatic filtering all of the content that their users upload, Article 13 takes an unprecedented step towards the transformation of the Internet from an open platform for sharing and innovation, into a tool for the automated surveillance and control of its users," the letter states.

Authors of the letter also wrote that they doubt the legality of Article 13, saying it goes against the European Charter of Fundamental Rights. David Kaye, a UN Special Rapporteur on freedom of opinion and expression also published a letter online, which outlined his concern that Article 13 would lead to censorship. A spokesperson for the European Parliament didn't immediately respond to a request for comment.

Also imagine that it's gonna be (by this article) bot's work and it can misflag your photos. Even if there will be some sort of for example tea company on your cup and your photo capture it, it might flag you from stealing that company emblem.

It's a pre-lim. Council(?) vote, supported by the right-wing and ironically the eurosceptic parties claiming the EU over-reaches its power.

First it has to go through Parliament and a few other things before being made a proper law, but it's pretty bad that Article 13 (and a similarly shit Article 11) got this far in the process.

A fucking ID filter like Youtube's restrictive system, and a link tax (yes, a tax to USE links displayed on a website, tho not sure if that's charged to the website host or the users).

Seems to be doing jack shit for me, it hardly even has an effect and its almost been a year since its been removed. If I need to pay a bit more just to use YouTube, so be it. I've already surrendered to that reality because I don't spend all my time on here anymore. I'm actually going to go back driving in a few hours or so.

Also, notice how I said North America and not the US. I'd love to get Canadian citizenship but I at the very least need a bachlor's degree just to do that, so that isn't happening. But west coast honestly is best coast. Amazing places to drive to.

I'm not afraid of living where I live, I'm content with living in my country and fortunate enough to live in an expensive city with over 200,000+ people 85% being Armenians, which changes the culture drastically here. I'd rather live here than in a super shitty city like the city of Los Angeles or anywhere else in the country where the community and neighborhood is crap. I may get bored with where I live and the drivers suck ass here, especially since I'm driving now and most people here drive like dogshit.

But, its my home, its where I'd rather be. And should I leave this city, I want to remain in this country or if I really need to, go to another English speaking country that doesn't have its steering wheel on the other side of the car, meaning I'd avoid England and the UK.

I have expensive taste.
