I mean, I'm all for more freedoms, but Europoors seem pretty content with not being able to own handguns.  I don't see how (re)introducing them would benefit European society.

A more logical first step would be to make it easier to obtain shotguns and hunting rifles for personal defense and sport.

But to get back to the topic, no. To have limitations on the carrying of knives over 7 inches (IIRC) without a valid reason, but allowing weapons far more dangerous to be concealed by anyone is just retarded.

Nor has giving concealed weapons to everyone helped, and now you deal with misfires and accidents which aren't avoidable either.

I recall a recent story about a child reaching into his mothers handbag for an ipod and accidentally firing the gun inside, hitting the mother and father. Fortunately the shot wasn't lethal, but there's countless stories of it ending badly.

At least with a knife accidents are less likely, and secondly I'm more inclined to fight an assailant brandishing a knife than a gun and I would argue far easier to do so.

That argument still applies to guns. What are you going to do against 4 guys with guns? pull the gun out and shoot all 4 before they shoot you?

Allowing ccw's and therefore guns in general just makes them more widespread. Criminals aren't stupid, if civillians ate allowed guns to defend themselves, criminals will get them too, as well as weapons not available to a law abiding citizen.

And seriously, you can't say allowing guns here wouldn't mean they reach the hands of criminals if they wanted them. You're assuming a perfect system of regulation which is highly unlikely at best.
