Because they go overboard and create elaborate bunkers, store more weapons than they have digits, and have so much canned ravioli that by the time they finished eating it all, it would have gone bad.

Because it's stupid and a waste of time/money/materials.

It also perpetuates this idea that we should live in a constant state of fear and have to worry about our survival in the event of an apocalyptic event. Shit's absurdly unlikely, yo. It also often creates an artificial demand for items like gun ammunition which makes it harder for normal people to buy their ammo.

It's one thing to have a reserve of non-perishable food and bottled water in case of some natural disaster. It's another thing to spend your life preparing for a day that will in all likelihood never come.

If a race of intelligent life does discover FTL travel and is colonizing space, the "Huns in space" type encounter is probably the least likely to occur.

It's irrelevant, I wouldn't need a weapon or bunker to fight them. They could drill a hole in your bunker with space lasers/drills and smoke you out if they wanted. You'd just be slightly delaying the inevitable. Your butt hole will be probed.

Because people don't want to accept the slightest possibility of one day not being able to have the comforts they've become used to.

Because they've never witnessed or been part of a disaster where they would have to prepare for the worst? Such as a huge natural disaster, or the possibility of getting nuked, like during the cold war.

Slightly less likely, but maybe they are aware of the possiblity of a disaster, but just can't be arsed putting the time and effort to prepare for it. So instead of preparing themselves, they insult those who prepare in an attempt to pressure them into essentially being as hopeless as them, making themselves feel better about not preparing.

Some of them take it way overboard. Most of all, they get so into it, that their own plans have loopholes. Their plans, don't actually make any sense, and they don't even see it. The key with preparation, is not to focus on a specific outcome. You make an overall plan that's adaptable, and take into account the two big factors in any major disaster. The environment, and people.

I live in a hostile environment for 8 months of the year. It can kill you in under a few hours of exposure on the coldest days. Distance separates everything by miles. That hostile environment is a good ward against people. If power ever went out here and stayed out, people would leave in droves.

The main factors would be heat, shelter, food, travel, and the people tough enough to stay. I'm not going to make an over complicated plan for an event that may never happen here. But I keep things ready, and have a general idea of what the game plan is if it ever happens.

I already live prepared in the event of running into a problem out here anyway, because you have to. Slipping on the roads and getting stuck in the ditch out here can kill you overnight in the winter.
