It comes from Old German/Old English

"Man" (Modern-day German "Mann) was used to denote an unspecific single person, whereas "Werman" and "Wyfman" were used for males and females (likely where "wife" developed from).

The problem is that "man" has evolved, in modern english, to mean something masculine

Well, the nice thing about some of those languages is that some of them have gender neutral terms, as well.

Spanish doesn't, and English just has "it," which, of course, is considered offensive. You can't refer to someone as an "it."

I don't know why we need gendered pronouns to begin with.

Who cares? The fact that a discussion exists around such a pointless move doesn't really interest me. I think the change is stupid because there's literally no point to doing it; thousands of women in the military are not going to suddenly start feeling much better as a result.

But I also don't care enough to argue over it. My entire argument on this issue boils down to the fact that I think it's a waste of time, but I'm not going to demand the navy or air force change it back if they do go through with it because it'd be a waste of my time.

I was being ironic with the gun thing because of course it won't stop everything but it's a step in the right direction. I think saying things like "it won't stop criminals!" is asinine and a strawman argument, as Flee has pointed out countless times in other threads. But hey, we can't even implement already standing laws because our government is incompetent on almost every federal level. Congress is a shining example. Lazy, self entitled, elitist idiots.

I couldn't care less about the male/female thing in the military because it's not really a big thing to care about anyway. They need to focus on the sexual assaults they get yearly.

Maybe I'm just ignorant on the problem here but I'm not really seeing the point in changing it. Like, "Man" refers to humanity as a whole, so don't titles like "Seaman" and "Airman" just assume a gender-neutral role? I feel like it's an over-analysis of the term.
