Pretty great stuff from Jon and brought a smile to my face to see Bill O' stammer and stutter around worse than Obama without a teleprompter.

Do you guys think "White Privilege" has still left a residue in our society?  I think it has, kind of.  It's not as prevalent, but it still likes to leave a stink in the communities, especially ones, like Jon said, with ghettos.

That was a joke, Max.  I'd support Obama over Romney or McCancer/PALIN any day, and have actually laughed at people trying to point at the teleprompter thing as an insult.  It's their version of scraping the bottom of the barrel (until recently, that is).

Ugh.

As much as I agree with Jon on key issues, I'm kind of hesitant to take this whole "white privilege" argument with any modicum of credence considering it's such a wide blanket statement on an entire race. O' Reilly does actually make a legitimate point about Asian wealth but it's instantly handwaved with some half assed answer while the audience laps it up facetiously.

But oh well.

People tend to become conservative as they age. Doesn't mean you suddenly think gays are evil, just that you develop a differing mind set. There's an article on it

I always love seeing O'Reilly and Stewart. It's fun to see the two duke it out in-character.

Do I believe that white people have advantages in certain areas over minorities? Of course. That's kinda tautological in the description of 'minority'. Be nature of a democracy, the majority, in whatever demographic, will always hold more power.

But O'Reilly is right, it is relative. A white guy growing up in a ghetto is less privileged (and I really hate that word because of how much it's been abused) than a black guy growing up in middle-class suburbia. To say that any given white person has more opportunity than any given black person is boldfaced racism; it doesn't accomplish anything, and all it does is stereotype based on skin color.

I think it all boils down to socio-economic standing, not necessarily race. It's tough for a black guy, brought up in the ghetto, to get out and make himself a new man. Same goes for backwoods southern hicks who live in trailer homes and make their own moonshine in the bathtub. It's [just as?] hard to get out of there, too. Poverty is an ugly cycle.

Dig this. Would 'class privilege' be more appropriate then?

I'd say that is more accurate, and less sensational.

Obviously having more money makes life easier, but when you get below a certain point [and usually paired with low value of education] it's a perpetuating cycle that is terribly difficult to break free from. Statistically, there's a ton of single-parent black families in low-income urban areas. That alone makes things more difficult, but combined with things like low quality of education and gang activity, each one of those elements compounds the burden one carries trying to break free from the cycle.
