Saw this on a practice GRE and thought it would piss off some people here.

Edit: Forgot the other two answers from the test.

Yeah, it's exactly like the .9...= 1 problem.

.9 repeating DOES NOT equal 1.

No matter how far you follow the repeating number (ten decimal places or 100), it will never reach 1.0

if .99999...can be used in place of 1 in an equation and you get the same answer then they are functionally the same number

like yeah it's objectively less than 1 but it works the same as it because math is weird

same applies to 3 x 1.3333....

1/3 can't be represented as a decimal, not even a repeating one.

.3 repeating times 3 doesn't equal 1, while 1/3 times 3 does.

1/3 is an expression that's full and complete, and exists in real life. You can't turn that expression into a number (no matter how much humans like numerical organization) because the decimal would go on endlessly and would never truly equal 1/3.

You can't have .3 ̅ of an apple, because the more you measured them, the bigger each third would magically get, which is impossible. You can have 1/3 of an apple.

4 > 3.999...

It's infinitesimally a fraction smaller than 4. Rounding up would only apply if there was a limit on significant figures which isn't stated, so you go back to that.

Thankfully in the real world no one gives that much of a shit about sig-figs., so they might as well be the same.

but that's why we have nifty symbols like ∞ to represent infinity

the decimal doesn't need to go on endlessly for us to understand that it's endless

EVEN WITH IT BEING ENDLESS, it does not equal 1/3. It will always have infinitely less decimal places than it needs to be 1/3.

If you need clarification on the second paragraph, I don't know what to tell you. You can't have  .3 ̅ of an apple, because the more you measured it, the larger it would get.

It really doesn't matter. This is a matter of logic, not math.

The problem with your syllogism above is that you correlated  1.3 ̅ with 4/3, which is false.

Signature goes here.
The point is that the difference between 1/3 and .3 repeating is so insignificantly small that they might as well be equal in applied mathematics.

EVEN WITH IT BEING ENDLESS, it does not equal 1/3. It will always have infinitely less decimal places than it needs to be 1/3.

won't there always be the precise number of decimal places needed

because it's endless

oh good, because i do

you tell me, "sorry for typing a sentence that reads like it was written by a 9 year old," and then you clarify

That, I understand. There's a fraction of an iota of a difference, which is why the two are used interchangeably, but in the sense of pure logic, they aren't equal.

no, i thought the point was that there was literally no difference

not even a small one

they're identical numbers
