This is mostly regarding islam but can be applied to a lot of other things as well. Also this doesnt apply to things like civil rights, mostly because it was a "fight to live" situation.


We need to be real here. Violence solves violent problems.  I'm really sick of hearing that "love always wins." when it doesn't. Cancerous ideas won't go away by a hashtag or tolerating them. It takes people dying to end tyranny.  holding hands, forming a human wall and singing amazing grace in front of a violent group is just gonna get you killed and wont change anything. when dealing with a largely proportionate violent group of people who  want you dead, sitting around tolerating them and their ideas is counterproductive. you combat real violence with real violence.

MLK is a good example. It may not always have been peaceful (look at Malcom X), but if your overall message is peace through love, tolerance, and justice, it is not a bad message.

It depends entirely on the situation. As Luc said, MLK accomplished way more than Malcolm X ever did. The populace as a whole are generally optimists, and everyone loves a good "peace and love" message. Social change is more effective to spur through nonviolence.

civil rights was a non-violent situation. govt wasn't out trying to kill black people because they wanted rights. I mean yea, the protesters got the shit beaten out of them but it wan't from the group of people that they were trying to reach. So being peaceful worked in that situation.
