An unnamed militant offers the following explanation: "These antiquities and idols behind me were from people in past centuries and were worshiped instead of God.

"When God Almighty orders to us destroy these statues, idols and antiquities, we must do it, even if they're worth billions of dollars," he says.

ISIS destroys Assyrian monuments, including the statue of Lamassu, which belong to one of the oldest empires in the history of mankind.

Well congratulations, ISIS, you've officially won the title of, "Worse than the Nazis" you fucking shitfucks.

This is both depressing and infuriating.

It's no different than british troops using the sphinx in egypt for target practice and blowing it's nose off. No different than the countless records and museums in germany and britian that were both bombed to pieces in the war. No different than mayan ruins being bulldozed over to make a road.

A lot of their funding comes from the smuggling of artifacts they steal from captured locations. The leading theory is that they couldn't haul the statutes off, so they destroyed them as propaganda.

This is partly true, one of the articles I read (BBC interview with a smuggler) was the guy explaining how ISIS destroy any artifacts with 'idolatrous imagery' from ancient coins to mosaics, despite them being worth a fortune. The ISIS mouthpiece they spoke with as well stated that their funding is in part from looting and smuggling historical artifacts but more from taxation/oil control in the regions they hold.

Along with probably some Saudi royals funnelling money to them for good measure. (Speculation)

Sigh. What are they doing? Don't they realize that resorting to such violence is literally plunging them back to the middle ages. That's all they want to do-- destroy, rape, and pillage meanwhile calling it an exploit for some twisted god who is pleased by such destruction and violence?

Probably they don't, the grunts probably don't either. Perhaps, they are all in their heads into smashing, killing and destroying until they either are happy with having little to destroy, or being broken and mutilated from the retaliation they have been tempting.

Maybe that's what they want. Just to die, and take the whole world with them into hell.

IMO, that's a good thing.

If they have little care for history they will barely leave a mark come the next few decades, let alone hold a caphiliate for eternity.

That, coupled with their medieval values towards women and education (you can't brainwash recruit without limiting that), it just leads to a group who, if iintervention does nothing will eventually destroy themselves.
