This is the way the world ends. Not with a bang but a whimper.
Despite not being exceptionally conservative in nature, the Conservative Party over here (of which I'm a member >.>) has quite a serious image problem. It's seen as toxic, essentially, the party of big business. While the other parties and their leaders also have image problems, it's endemic for the Tories. If you consider yourself a conservative, what do you think of your "side's" image and, conversely, what do you think of progressives?

They're seen as toxic because they are. They're also generally pretty stupid.
lol

That's exactly the sort of tribal mentality that leads to gridlock and a lack of political progress. Conservatives aren't stupid, their psychology and moral priorities just tend to be organised differently when compared to progressives.

I said generally. I rarely encounter conservatives that have logical arguments for things beyond "muh bible" and "muh constitution"
So read some conservative scholars? Pick up books by the likes of Thomas Sowell, or even Ron Paul. It's not at all confusing that conservatives would rely on documents of political and moral authority, since their moral ideas focus around respect, sanctity and order much more than the likes of progressives.

Uhm...why?
Doesn't seem fair of you to pass judgement on an entire mode of sociopolitical thinking based on the fact that the conservatives you've met tend to be disagreeable, or even stupid, when oftentimes the same could be said of their opposites. It'd essentially be like me saying FDR must've been a bad president because he was in a wheelchair.

Of course, this is only if you're interested. I wouldn't expect or want you to sit through a Thomas Sowell book bored and reaching for a revolver.

Constitution is a very important document

Have fun not getting a fair trial, free speech, and privacy without it

American conservatives seem to be little more than Bible-thumping egoists.  Not sure about conservatives across the pond.

If I'm not here, I'm doing photography. Or I'm asleep. Or in lockdown. One of those three, anyway.

The current titlebar/avatar setup is just normal.
Well, at the moment the three main UK parties are rather centralised on the political scale and I find them all equally terrible for varying reasons.

That doesn't mean I want UKIP as an alternative, however.

Well, ours went from Contempt of Parliament to Majority Government last election, so they must be doing something right.

The "Bible Thumper" types that hold so much sway in the Republican Party in the US have been largely purged from our Conservative Party. You will never hear any MP open their mouths about abortion or gay marriage, simply because the party does not want to touch those political footballs with at 10 foot pole.

The rest of the party's policies are typical right-leaning. Lowering taxes, promoting free trade and economic development, balancing the budget, tough on crime stances, improving national defense (at least more than the Liberals), bombing ISIS back to whatever came before the Stone Age, etc.

However, I'd be much happier if they drop-kicked that Temporary Foreign Worker Program into the nearest trash bin. That thing has been abused to no end and is out of control.

I used to be one and if it wasn't for the present cabinet, I'd probably be voting for them.

But to risk letting these contemptible fuckwits back in, is just plain wrong. They aren't all bad, but the rotten apples really spoiled the bunch. Michael Gove, Ian Duncan Smith and a few of the other cabinet members really took me by surprise on just how idiotic* they really are. The Baboon fucks with the curriculum to try and make his mark on the education system, and promptly gets votes of no confidence from all the unions (I'm not fond of unions by any measure buuut, that's pretty damning) and all his silly bloody ideas that have once again fethed with the future of children. If they were bringing back grammar schools and technical colleges, I could get behind that. But instead they shit the bed and don't even get me started on fucking academies.

*See self serving

IDS and ATOS can all die in eternal hellfire, their stupid witchhunt against those with long term illnesses and disabilities are completely inexcusable. Let's make life harder for those who already have it hardest!

I could go on, but the point is the bullingdon boys and their fucking rentboy libdems have left one sour taste.

When they stop doing things like selling off the Royal Mail and setting it up so their pals can make a fortune off the valuation/subsequent sales then they might have a less toxic image.

As a whole, Conservatives provide a necessary grounding and check to progressive rushing. Not every bit of progress is good, and keeping a focus on stability and tradition is just as important as improving things. When they oppose social change, they always lose but it helps to have the issue examined in greater detail by the general public for their to be arguments over new policies/laws.

This is all very rambly but basically I don't think badly of the conservative branch of politics, I don't agree with it that much anymore but that's more because I'm not inclined to vote for the people who serve their interests above those of the general public.
