What if Christianity didn't exist?

Let's go back in time for a moment and imagine that the Jewish carpenter from Nazareth in Roman occupied Israel had never been born and Christianity hadn't come into existence. How different would Western society and the world for that matter look today?

This is the way the world ends. Not with a bang but a whimper.
If you want to stop Christianity ever existing, you don't need to go back that far.

You just need to stop Constantine luckily gazing upon a comet which, to him, looked to be in the shape of a cross.

If it hadn't become legitimized and made the official state religions in the Western and Eastern Roman Empires do you think it would have continued to exist underground or would it have fizzled out?

Difficult to say, really.

It would probably have remained as Jainism or Zoroastrianism is today; a cult, more than anything, and probably rightfully so.

Do you think that polytheistic religions such as Roman and Germanic paganism would dominate Western society like Christianity did throughout the medieval period did? Or do you think that it would be much less centralized and that religion would hold little to no control over secular politics?

Some other mass indoctrination religion would surely arise to fill the void.

There were different kind of prophets at the time. Christianity quickly gained an advantage due to its radical view of excluding other deities, and beliefs.

I am not sure whether you intend to point Christianity as the main culprit of the dark ages. That's essentially wrong, as at the time Christianity was mainly a political tool to ensure who is a friend, and who wasn't. Traders would convert to Christianity to be able to trade with others in the mediterranean. The fall of the Roman empire is also more due to a huge number of economical, military and societal factors where Christians were the last concern of that sprawling empire.

I believe this says enough.

The chart is inaccurate and biased, the chart comes from an anti-religion site and also has no legitimate Y-axis.

Even though I agree with you, you don't deny the statement the photo is trying to make, do you?

Would you care to justify yourself, then? Should be interesting, coming from an intellectual, like yourself.

The only reason somebody can characterise the Middle Ages as the "Dark Ages" is by being exceptionally ignorant of Medieval history. The Middle Ages were far, far from dark.

Not to mention, your graph conflates all three periods of the Middle Ages with the "Dark Ages", which usually only refers to the Early Middle Ages from the years 400-900.

The rise of Christianity was inevitable. Unlike the Roman-Greco gods, Christianity promised an afterlife, forgiveness, and undying love all of which greatly aided the spread of Christianity, especially under the rule of Nero where the people learned that Christians were being put to death not for starting the fire (one that happened under Nero) but to cover Nero's crimes and to sate his appetite for cruelty. Compassion for the meek followers of Jesus, whose blameless conduct was apparent to many, led to a new wave of conversions.

The Greeks knew the Earth was a sphere and that it revolved around the sun with the other planets. Then came this religion which brought ignorance. We went from knowing that stuff to believing the Earth is flat and that the sun and other planets revolved around it.

Pretty much everything you just said is false. First of all, the Greeks didn't know the solar system was heliocentric; one guy proposed the idea but didn't have the capacity to draw up a proper model. Aristarchus's work was lost, not repudiated by the Christians following the fall of Rome.

What's more, I don't think we believed the Earth was flat at any point throughout the Middle Ages, we just underestimated its circumference.

I've always been under the impression that the "Middle Ages" were an abrupt stop for scientific advancement. I've been wrong this whole time, then?

From what I know in the West it was but the Arab world would flourish during this period, saved numerous Greek texts by translating them into Arabic, and helped set the precedence for the Renaissance by re-exposing the West. I may be inaccurate in some places so please correct me if I am.
