I've also learned that maths isn't the only way to see the world. But having a formal framework to refer to does help a lot.

And don't be naive, all of western thought is based on the interplay between Plato's forms and Aristotle's empiricism. Most people only structure their thoughts based on "Well I know this guy, and this event happened to me, therefore X", which is strictly empirical. Meanwhile I've spent considerable time studying the historical development of mathematical thought, which is almost exclusively the study of platonic forms of a specific kind. What you're probably not aware of is that at higher levels mathematics largely becomes a study of making analogies (isomorphisms, homeomorphisms, various other morphisms), and being able to apply techniques learned in one discipline to a different discipline.

So I stand by my words, I have learned to see and think about the world in a way completely different to most non-mathematicians. You pretty much cannot comprehend most physical concepts on any useful level without having some mathematical prowess, and we both know that most people suck at maths. I've earned the right to be smug about my achievements.

Really, the interplay between intuition about a given subject, and a rigorous explanation, is at the core of most people's thoughts, just tucked away subconsciously. Mathematics is about teasing out the exact thought process for any given field of study, and making tangible to work with. For instance, we all have an intuitive idea about distances, angles, volumes, because it's an evolutionary requirement for us to survive. Mathematics allows us to translate this intuition into co-ordinate systems, linear transformations, spatial sets, numerical measurements; and then it goes further and allows us to extend that thinking to higher dimensional spaces, or to relax certain underlying assumptions about the geometry of space, and create new models of physical space, both for theoretical purposes (see general relativity, based off of the work of Riemann on geometry), or practical purposes (see any flight map and how it uses spherical geometry to plot it's course over a map).

It's easy to assume I'm stupid if you don't know what I'm talking about, but that's okay, 'cause It doesn't actually make me stupid.

Largely still my point, but have you ever considered what factors determine what someone wants? a large amount is genetic predisposition and how they're raised, but another significant factor is what media they consume and what peer pressures they're exposed to. You can effect both of these to a large degree.

See I asked that question because the concept is almost self contradictory. I mean I get the principle you're working with, I just can't agree with it myself since it boils down to "we're annoyed that we can't do something that's inherently impossible". It just doesn't lead to anywhere, which is why I see it as trivial. It'd be a bit of an exaggeration, but I could build the same philosophy out of "I hate that 4 sided triangles don't exist, nobody should live in a world without 4 sided triangles", it lacks the moral side to it which I'm not trying to devalue (because that is a respectable point you make), but this silly version would lead to the same results, ending all life to put them out of the misery of not living in a world where contradictions can't exist.

Nobody's denying that, what challenger is saying is "greek wuz dumb as shit you hear me mang" without backing any of it up.

If he actually had looked into it, he'd know that the exact same techniques pioneered by the greeks are still being used today, specific proofs regarding existence and uniquesness of mathematical structures in modern textbooks, use identical formalisms to those of the greeks. You cannot condemn the greeks without disregarding all of mathematics as we know it, but he's clearly talking out his ass.

Pythagoras
Eratosthenes
Eudoxus
Ptolemy (the cartographer, not Alexander's man)
Hippaius
Archimedes
And that's just off the top of my head, I know there are others worth mentioning but I've made my point.

Reading comprehension is not your strongest point is it? It's up to challenger to prove his argument. But since I like talking about maths, I'll give some greater detail.

The common argument is to point to Muhhamed Al Khwarizmi, who's al-jabar was a treatise on algebraic methods, and if you notice, his name gave rise to the word algorithm. The other candidate to assert muslim scholarship is Omar Khayyam, who did some rigorous investigations into the foundations of Euclidean geometry.

Now the argument from philosemites, is to point at either of these two men and say "look, we wuz mathematicians and shit", specifically the claim that al khwarizmi invented algebra and that omar was a pioneer of geometry. But this is false, because the Greek Diophantus wrote the first real treatise on algebra with his arithmetica which predates Khwarizimi by a lot. Meanwhile you can pick basically any greek geometer and you'll find that they all tackled Euclid's fifth. Personally I quite Like Apollonius for his work on conics, but I digress.

As for arabic numerals, that's still a moot point since greeks were able to lay the foundations of numer based maths using geometry. I have a copy of Euclid's elements right here, and books 7 through 9 all deal exclusively with numerical concepts. Ever heard of prime numbers? you can thank Euclid for our understanding of them.

Ah, but what about the specific hindu numerals we use today? well the concept of positional based counting systems technically predates even the greeks going back to egypt in some forms, but we can trace our modern form to two indians, Aryabhata and Brahmagupta, the later of course gave us the number zero, and all of it's basic properties.

So what does that leave the arabian contribution to maths? well, they transferred the numerals "0123456789" from India to Europe, which is actually quite the feat of historical scholarship, many ancient works only survived by being translated to arabic and surviving the fall of rome, then later translated back to European languages. Ptolemy's greatest work is known more commonly by it's arabic name, the almagest, for instance. But it is an outright lie to claim that the Islamic world produced most of our mathematical knowledge, and that evil westerners covered it all up. Muslims were behind the intellectual ball and acted more like storage for knowledge than as a creator of it.

So thanks cindy, for proving you don't know jack shit about maths or my views, and for giving me a chance to lecture you all with my superior knowledge, my dick can now be sucked.

Notice the greater similarity our modern/medieval numerals have to the hindu ones, than they have with the arabic ones. Your beloved desert was transfer station, not much more.
