Released video of the kid that was shot in Ohio a couple days ago. Let me point out, after watching the video, of what I see. First off, you see the kid pointing the gun at a person walking by and seconds later, see him carrying the realistic looking gun in a threatening manner. Soon afterward he has it pointed randomly, probably against other people. The police arrive and, while difficult to see, he does in fact make a reach for his waistband where the realistic gun was and the police shot him, thinking it was a real gun

Now here's the fuck up on the police side, they were too damn close. They pulled up feet away from him and didn't place themselves and the cruiser in a distance. They also had no cover to hide behind in the case of the gun was real and the kid started firing

But despite this, I have to say the shooting is still very much justifiable

Just adding a spoiler.

You still justify a child being shot? Well that tells us everything.

I've entirely changed my position after watching the video.

Before, I was totally behind the cops' actions. Kid had a gun, didn't comply with commands, reached for it when told to put his hands up. That's his fault.

After seeing the video, it almost looks like a drive-by shooting. The kid was sitting at a table not doing anything.

This is not the greatest sig in the world, no. This is just a tribute.
Has it been confirmed yet that the caller repeatedly mentioned that the weapon was probably a toy but dispatch failed to pass that information on to the responding officers?

Seeing the video, yeah, I understand the actions of the officer completely. I blame the kid's parent's for not being around, OR teaching him how to conduct himself with a gun, real or fake, in public and in possible presence of an officer.

Are we watching the same video? I missed the part where they drove off after spraying the area with bullets

The speed at which they pulled their guns and started shooting is what I was talking about. Pull up close to someone, jump out and start shooting? That's something I expect to see in the hood from a gang - not cops.

It doesn't take a long time to tell somebody to put their hands up and for them to reach for their wasteline, maybe 2-4 seconds, which the video demonstrates perfectly. The cops most likely already had their weapons drawn since they were being called to a person waiving and pointing a gun around so they were prepared. In a situation where a person reaches for a weapon, you only have milliseconds to make a decesion

I wouldn't be surprised if that was the case, just like the incident where a the guy was shot in W.M because the fucker lied to dispatch about him pointing a gun

But probably doesn't mean certainty, it basically means 50%

Right, because that can be deduced from the broken up, fuzzy footage, which does not show how things played out fluidly.

I blame the kid's parents. I mean, what the fuck is a 12 year old doing walking around a park with a REALISTIC looking gun and pointing it at people? I'm surprised some ghetto dude didn't shoot him after freaking out. You're bound to get a response either way, and this one came from the police. I understand why they did what they did. But, let's blame the cops again rather than demand why this kid was unsupervised and not taught how to conduct himself with a mock weapon.

So much of this. We've come to the point where somehow children and parents are perfect and can't be questioned

No, blame IS relevant here. The parents are most to blame for not giving their child common sense and not supervising him, especially at his age

Is someone trying to take the officer to court over this? From what I hear he is completely heartbroken.

What good is there in deciding someone is at fault when there were mistakes made by everyone?

What good? Oh I don't know, maybe using this as an example to get parents to be more watchful over their children so this doesn't end up happening again?

Ignoring the issue won't fix a damn

Yea that's pretty shitty. Deadly force is suppose to be a last resort. You're not even suppose to point your gun at a person unless you've gone down the check list, and have no choice but to kill.

There was no time there for the cop to give him instructions, or for him to comply. You don't just roll up and start firing before assessing a situation.

Really wish people would stop trying to bring their politics into these types of things, or connect the various shootings as if they were all the same thing. They're all separate situations. If there is evidence of wrong doing on the officers part then he should face justice. If there is no evidence then he should not. Its as simple as that.

Rather much disagree. From the calls coupled with the video, he had made himself an armed and possible dangerous suspect; that's enough for police to have their weapons drawn and at the ready. Video also shows him reaching for his waistline, and not putting his hands up. Again, going with the situation the kid placed himself in, the police didn't want to take a chance and end up getting killed, even though they didn't know it was fake

On top of this, which is true, the 911 dispatcher didn't even make clear to the cops that the person who called even specified he thought the gun could be fake.

Of course, we could just stop making fake guns look so goddamn real.

There were mistakes on all sides.  Enough for me to conclude that the blame doesn't fall solely on the police or the kid.

It's just tragic, plain and simple.

If I'm not here, I'm doing photography. Or I'm asleep. Or in lockdown. One of those three, anyway.

The current titlebar/avatar setup is just normal.
I don't what to think. Judging by the (poor quality) footage, I can't tell how realistic that toy gun is. But seriously, walking around a park waving it around and pointing at people isn't helping him. He may be 12 but there has to be some common sense there.

As for the police officer, I can see why he had been prep'd in the event of a real gun, but Jesus, he did literally just drive right up to the kid and shoot him. I thought being a good distance away was better for these sort of things? Plus, if he was further away, maybe the cop might not have been so jittery (being so close to a potentially armed person) and it might have happened differently. But there's no point in "What-If"s.

All in all, it's a shitty situation. It came out bad for both "sides" here.

I know right!

Damn those police officers for not going up to him and politely asking him to hand over the deadly weapon.
