Anyone who is outraged at this and continues to eat meat/dairy is a hypocrite.

++Mod Note++
Not a great post to start on with some good old attacks but this was the post that derailed the thread, so rather than butchering it, carry on with the good discussion on page two please <.<

Not really. It would depend on the treatment of the animals in question.

I hardly think slaughtering a cow in a relatively painless way compares to torturing an animal for "science".

Most of the time the animals aren't taken care of in a "relatively painless way".

You can't really be mad about this and then go out and eat veal, brother.

especially sine one scenario has a very utilitarian purpose while the other doesn't, as it's a needless experiment that tells us nothing new and results in no gain of knowledge for human kind.

The all or nothing mentality of your kind is as toxic as that of hardcore libertarians.

What I meant was that you're not really justified to be mad. Obviously, you can be hypocritical if you want. That's your prerogative.

Correct. The ones who can't complain are the ones who voted for the current politicians, since that's what you wanted. Everyone else has a right to bitch. Especially disenfranchised third party or independent who have no real voice in the government.

So if those people have no right to bitch about the government they voted for, why do you have the right to bitch about animal suffering when you (presumably) continue to support it?

I feel like you know what I mean. You are being intentionally obtuse for whatever reason(s).

Because there's a differing in the suffering. I already mentioned that one scenario is purely utilitarian and that the other serves no purpose.

As far as utilitarianism goes, animal farming is strongly in the negative; it wastes far more resources than it provides.

I mean I get the point you're trying to make, but it's simply not correct.

Meat is marked wether it's humanely slaughtered or not

I've see cows slaughtered at the local dairy farm. It's nowhere near a torterous experience just for the sake of "let's see what will happen" like this is

We're comparing the hypocrisy. And the difference in suffering is far greater when comparing the rat to the meat industry than comparing someone who voted for Bush complaining about him.

Intention doesn't really matter here, though. It's a matter of experiencing pain.

I wouldn't have a problem with the meat or dairy industry if the process was painless. Same goes for the rat in the article.

This.
You guys ever visit a local butcher? You vegans ever even walk outside of a city? Ever eat meat that isn't slapped with the logo of a national brand?
Cattle and hogs are killed here with a .22lr, delivered with surgical accuracy right against the skull. They don't feel shit.

And if there was ever a sure-fire way to verify that, than I would be on board with the whole "eating animals" thing. But unfortunately, without me witnessing it, I can't.

Nice generalisations, though.

good cattle farmers do make it painless. Actual farmers usually love and respect each and every animal on the farm but that's their livelyhood. They use special "stun guns" that essentially render the cow brain dead before they kill if. Big industry farms are a problem I'll give you that which is why I try not to support them. Making animals live in their own filth and then just shooting them or slitting their throats is not ok and not what humane farmers do.

There's a Perdue chicken house next door my home. It's fucking disgusting and the trucks picking up loads of chickens make me sick. Free range chicken farms are night and day to the big brand name "farms" though.

The problem is its more profitable to be inhumane

But like I said to Das, unless I'm there to witness the death of said animal, there's no way to verify that. And as a wise woman once said: ain't nobody got time for that.

But meat isn't really my bag, anyways. I'd much rather you show me an instance where dairy is "humanely" acquired, so that I may indulge in an extra cheesy pizza from Little Tony's down the road.

Come on, that's a spurious argument and you know it. If you think animal farming can be run on a large scale without making any compromises to animal welfare, you're kidding yourself. You're playing roulette with an animal's welfare so you can chow down on a burger.

Not to mention the catastrophic resource wastage and environmental impacts that aren't remedied by "humane farming". So please, let's drop the greed-masquerading-as-utilitarianism argument. It's simply not compelling at all.

This is basically the case.

If you eat meat, as I do, it's best to just acknowledge your greed is over-riding your ability to act in accordance with moral reason.

Good man.

However, I don't think "greed" is the right term to use--I'd say "addiction", and that would probably be more apt.

Most of the problem.
I really loath going in to Reading, and that seems to be what I'd have to do. So there's gas right there...
Of course, you could say to try my best at the very, very close by grocery store with supplements from the drug store the next town over... that's more trouble than easing the (non existent) guilt on my conscious is worth, and probably more expensive than making those trips into the city.

Then why the weak attempts at justifying your actions?

I mean, either you aren't comfortable with admitting the stark reality of your choices, or you don't want others to see you in a certain way.

And yet you're still persisting, now with the excuse that it's not affordable, even though it's probably the cheaper option.

I just think it's a strange cycle: first there's the excuses, then when they're exhausted there's the cavalier confession that you don't care... then back to the excuses again.

That's congitive dissonance for you.
