I'm curious as to what you consider as part of the liberal MSM, and what "blatant lies and horse shit" is being spewed.

NPR tends to be decent. They're left-leaning, but throughout the election they seemed to give very fair coverage of both sides.

I've also been reading a lot of City Journal lately, and though they're right-leaning, the articles are all very thorough and cite sources for claims.

In general you ought to just avoid news that may qualify as "trending". Something designed to garner clicks or go viral is likely little more than grossly misrepresented information or outright lies/clickbait. This may be good for following day to day snippets of news, but building a reliably view of the world is impossible with such sources.

"Unbiased news source," AKA whatever news source best caters to my worldview.

Maybe before you disregard some news source as "biased," ask yourself how unbiased you are first.

Launched in December of 2012, we are a political and cultural blog with four major goals:

1. Reinvigorating dialogue among a disparate and edgy right-wing.
2. Severely rustling jimmies among the childish and regressive left-wing.
3. Putting cuckservatives in the cuck shed where they can watch us with their civilization.
4. Using the therapeutic power of LARPing to help tens of thousands of young men manage their autism.

holy shit lmao

Everything's going to have a slant, but the trick is to find a balance of opinions you do like and those you may not, though I'm admittedly having a bit of trouble with the latter. Don't just read the same handful of sources, either.

For general news, sometimes I'll just Google search a topic and read a few pieces to get a complete picture, because the MSM isn't always reliable, and then check out the same news on my usual list of sources. As for those specific sources, here are the main ones in no particular order:

The Intercept
The Nation
The Wall Street Journal
Reuters
Democracy Now!
NPR

I'm always looking for suggestions.

CNN, MSNBC, basically anything on TV that isn't FOX really, but FOX is it's own can of worms. As far as the "blatant lies and horse shit", the whole "Fake News" narrative they've been trying to push for the last month or so in order to try and discredit anything that goes against their agenda (mainly as a direct reaction to WikiLeaks), whilst they themselves have been purveying "Fake News" in the form of all the false flag hate crimes supposedly committed by "le ebil racist Trump supporters!", not to mention all the pro-Clinton propaganda they were touting pre-election. They know damn well that their house of cards is falling down, and they're going into meltdown mode to try and prevent it.

As a journalism and political science major, I don't even know where to begin

I don't think you can really have an unbiased news source without them leaning towards one side or the other. It's very difficult by nature to hold an unbiased stance when you're talking about a subject.

Plus, think about it. An unbiased news source would bore most people. They'd get straight to the point, take no sides while making a general informative statement about the event, and be done.

While I believe that's the way to go in general, for most people, it just wouldn't be the news without shilling and sensationalism.

I'd argue against journalists being mere stenographers.

As Hubble said, NPR is probably the best one. They're also funded by donations I think? I'm not sure. They're left leaning a bit, but I remember them giving more than fair coverage towards Trump and his supporters during the election. I liked that, even if I didn't like the things I was hearing.

There's no such thing as unbiased, as much as one might try.  What's more important, I find, is to just be straight up with your bias or agenda to begin with.

They're doing a disservice to their readers by uncritically repeating, and/or not fact-checking, claims being made, especially by authority figures. Simply repeating what someone else said does not paint an accurate picture of reality.

One recent egregious example was Trump claiming some 3 million votes were cast illegally to give Clinton better numbers in the popular vote. He gave zero evidence to substantiate this dramatic claim of voter fraud. Simply reporting that he said it and not calling out his horseshit is bad journalism.

Likewise, there's claims that the USG is very confident about Russian involvement in the election, but there remains zero evidence publicly available to substantiate the claim. Any article worth its salt should point out that fact, but many don't.

In both cases, the journalists who ran the stenographer angle should hang their heads in shame--it's a pathetic subservience to authority figures, plus they contributed to the election cycle's 'fake news.'

EDIT: I kind of goofed this post because I got logged out by accident. I forgot part of what I'd already typed so I fudged it. I hope no one quotes this before I finish editing.

(I don't know if that's what Sandy meant when he made his post, but there you go.)

I had other notions in my post but I'm kinda garbled at the moment to properly explain where I'm getting at.

My thinking is more along the lines that news outlets should be responsible for reporting what's up and nothing more. If you want to go to a fact check section than that's fine too, but keep it seperate. It seems like today there's too much personal opinion involved in reporting events rather than actually just reporting them for what they are at base value.

And, while there's panels and sections devoted for discussion on events hosted by news networks, we come back to the issue of being heavily biased and leaning in favor towards one side. This ends up making a collection of news networks doing the whole "my side your side" bullshit so much that now you have to personally fact check what the news is spewing to verify their slanted content.

So what's worse? An outlet not calling anybody out on their bullshit but merely showing the statement at face value? Or an outlet that leans in favor to a certain side and never really shows the whole deal up front? Personally, watching networks perpetreate the "my side your side" mentality that seems to be going around in force these days is agonizing.

I just want to listen to what's up. Not have to fact check what the fuck the news is saying because I know that they aren't actually telling the whole story.

I for one don't think fact-based reporting should be an opt-in service.

NPR stations are funded by corporate donors & private donations from listener-members. my local NPR station is always thanking constant contact for providing funding, for example.

Reuters, BBC is sometimes good, also Al-Jazeera world news for anything that does not have anything to do with Qatar or has a strong bias.

Just remember what the organizations bias is and keep your head to the ground, search deep into reddit to find out events occurring and keep tabs on those events and listen to the both sides. Reddit and most news sources are heavy American centric and lose focus of issues around the world from Venezuela to Korea Rasputin story, and the Chinese and Singapore debacle a few weeks ago. There was also a story about Ghana election.

But honestly download the Reuters app and go to the wire instead of trending. Go to associated press and keep track of latest news on their international list. And then look for academic communities for different topics you are interested in. I cannot for some reason remember a military journal I was reading a year ago and a intelligence journal that I was reading which had some really nice articles on changes in geopolitics.

Also for economics to learn recommend searching up Meta post and going through r/badeconomics. I listen to them and usually unfortunately rely on the appeal to authority as some of the points go over my head. Right now in Engineering and taking seven courses this semester. So I really have a hard time staying up to date on them.

Another thing to note, you have to accept listening to stories that make you uncomfortable or you disagree with. Sometimes they are telling the truth no matter how much you disagree with it. Just to some more studies on the topic later if you want and widen your scope of the story.
