The fall of Lucifer.

As I'm sure most of you know. The fall of Lucifer was a time in Christian mythology after the War in Heaven ended and Lucifer was cast into the deepest pit of Hell. While it's obvious the story itself is just a story there is some truth to it.

Lucifer (before he became the Satan) was the Roman got of enlightenment. While the origins of Christianity are put for debate (after all the Bible is not a historical document) it is a fact that in the early days of Christianity, the Romans persecuted Christians and committed acts which in the 21st century would be considered crimes against humanity. After a time the Roman Empire became Christian and their beloved Lucifer was translated into the Hebrew Satan, thus the Christian God cast Lucifer (the Roman deity) from the heavens (worthy of worship) and he became the great satan.

So the Fall of Lucifer is a metaphor for Christianity taking over the old Roman Pantheon. Make sense?

Paradise Lost was largely composed of metaphors and references. I dare say it's one of its best qualities as a piece of literature.

The events of Paradise Lost are considered canon by the Catholic Church

This isn't even Christian mythology, this is the pop culture interpretation of the Lucifer story.

Also, no, Paradise Lost isn't catholic canon. Not sure if that was meant to be a joke.

Sorta. The translation of the literal Hebrew phrase "morning star" in the KJV is 'Lucifer'. It wasn't written as an analogue to the Roman god Venus (the planet referred to as the morning star), and the name 'Lucifer' is relatively modern.

Well I don't have some grand showstopper of a post, I just thought this might be interesting to continue, in a more serious tone.

I get that a lot of you see all religion as fairy tales, but there's no reason not to have a good talk about what those tales mean, how they affect us, and whether there's any value in them.

As usual, I'm not here to convert anyone, but if you're going to criticize a religion, at least make sure you've got some of the basic premises down.

Maybe nobody will reply and this thread will be dead by tonight. If not, that's great. The Facebook joke above is a good starting point, since the tree the knowledge of good and evil is an interesting topic.

I'm actually always interested to hear things firsthand from someone who hasn't lost the faith as it were. Not just christianity mind you, pretty much any religion and I'll happily listen/discuss it politely.

I don't count cults as religions though, so Scientologists - Hard Cheese.

I'll remind myself to come back here tomorrow to discuss things properly, because Christian theology is certainly something I enjoy <.<
