This is not the greatest sig in the world, no. This is just a tribute.
For me, this has been something that I've had a great deal of trouble with since becoming an atheist.Non-existence after death to me nullifies the point of doing anything. At least when I was still religious, I could coerce myself to adhering to set behaviors due to the benefit of a heaven.
Agreed. It's kind of an easy way to ensure structure or some sort of unified and accepted morality. It's not needed though. And yeah, in the incredibly grand scheme of things, there's no point in me waking up for work tomorrow, however, in the event that is my life, and in regards to how actions mean things on the small scale (be it to yourself or another) it does have meaning.

Quote
A great deal of the time, I'll hear other atheists say that since this is the one shot you get, you need to make it worthwhile; that because there is no objective worth in life, you have to find your own subjective meaning. I just can't see it from that perspective. The way I see it, because in the grand scheme of things, you have so little impact that anything you do is nothing more than a waste.
And so your objective is not to change the world. Now stop worrying about leaving a name in the History books and enjoy yourself (within the limitations of the law, preferably. Don't go killing people for fun.)

Quote
Yes, I do realize I am having an existential crisis, but it's been one that has been ongoing for over 3 years now. So, for those others who believe that the only thing we have to look forward to after death is worms eating our corpse, are you stuck within a similar mindset or do you believe in making your own meaning?
I for one welcome the chance to finally give back to the planet in the form of nutrients and organic compounds. There's no end more fitting for having enjoyed a life on this earth.

Something I have been consistently unable to comprehend without having a mental breakdown.

I just push the idea out of my head when it comes around. Otherwise I will turn into a screaming, crying mess.

Just part of the atheism process.

Usually it goes Theist -> Deist -> 'Agnostic' (Used incorrectly) -> Agnostic Atheist (commonly just called Atheist)

Once you hit atheism for the first time there are usually years worth of depression and feeling like everything is meaningless plus the general fear of 'nothingness'. I normally don't like to get personal on here but from personal experience that stage can get pretty bad. Especially if there are few experienced atheists around to talk you through that.

After you get through that mess of thought though its a cakewalk. I don't really feel anything when thinking about nonexistence now. Other than a vague sense of wonder maybe. It won't matter since you won't be alive, so why worry about it. If anything it seems relaxing/peaceful. Mostly its just about coming to terms with reality and not needlessly fearing the inevitable.

Thinking about the big picture of the universe and how we're all (alive or dead) essentially just atoms that are part of that universe is a cool thought, but keep in mind that to you it is the big picture that is meaningless. Its the small picture (your life) that has as much meaning as you choose to give it. 'Meaning' and 'purpose' are not some kind of objective truths. They are subjective ideas and relative at that.

Also helps to remember that your emotions do not define you. That they're just different parts of your brain, and gaining control and discipline over them helps out in a lot of other areas in life. Shit gets better in time. Your brain is still working through understanding reality. Just give it time to process the idea.

Maybe since I reverted to atheism at such a young age these kind of questions have never bothered me.

This is the way the world ends. Not with a bang but a whimper.
Sorry, I can't really relate. Death just doesn't scare me. It's like an off-switch to me. Nothing matters when you're dead because you're no longer extant to experience or comprehend it.

You will find out who you are not a thousand times, before you ever discover who you are. I hope you find peace in yourself and learn to love instead of hate.
Doesn't bother me at all.

I think the problem OP is having is he is extending that to think that nothing matters even when your alive, that he's becoming a nihilist.

It's something I hear a lot from atheists who were previously religious. They may have lost their beliefs but many still retain the idea deeply ingrained in them by religion that their lives need a higher purpose to matter.

I can't really relate to that either, since I was raised with little influence from any religion and so never developed a concern for these things. But if you were to spend much of your life believing there is an afterlife it seems natural to me that people would feel lost after losing it.

My stupidity is self evident.
Nihilistic thought is an unfortunate result of the pervasive and poisonous religious concept that life is worthless if if not lived in service of a god or carried on forever on the psyche of "deconverts".

If I'm not here, I'm doing photography. Or I'm asleep. Or in lockdown. One of those three, anyway.

The current titlebar/avatar setup is just normal.
I suppose I'm lucky that I've never really thought deeply about death. It's too far away from now for me to care much. Was essentially born an atheist so I've never had to "come to terms" with things and accept my way of life any different.

I don't really have a goal with a set purpose in my life. I want to enjoy my life, and to do that I need to do the best I can, in terms of education so I can a job I might actually like and so I can fund myself for entertainment in my free time. That doesn't mean stepping over people, so if I can make people around me happy on my way to the box than that's always a good thing too.

@Everyone who replied: This isn't a topic a short message rebuttal does justice to. Trying to condense this just makes you inherently come off as overly hedonistic or an absolute nihilist. That's just mathematically how a deductive post can be set up [statement -> contained premises -> restatement]. I shy away from this kind of stuff aside from dedicated philosophy forums for that very reason... "short" arguments against nihilism are always inherently unconvincing it seems. And, well, it brings up the topic of religion which is never fun to talk about online :P

tl;dr: Much of your arguments won't be convincing to any person fascinated with the concept of nonexistence. Just sayin' right now, I've seen too many people get pissed off by this discussion.

OT: If you really want to fight nihilism, you should read some more Camus XD

understood, it's a hard concept to articulate as it is. Trying to do so over a forum doesn't exactly help matters.

omg, just to be clear: I didn't mean to insinuate that your arguments were bad, invalid, or unsound, just that most of the time the other party probably won't be convinced! Or do I sound like more of a jerk now

the one true God is Doctor Doom and we should all be worshiping him.
Well, it's true. If there's no Afterlife, nothing you do will matter and you will have no impact on the world, positive or negative. As soon as you're dead, you're past caring anyway, so you have nothing to worry about.

Take comfort in both of those facts.
