> Not partaking in a minutes silence.

Such a fucking crime.
17 people are dead for drawing a cartoon, and yet you can't seem to find anything even vaguely disagreeable in people explicitly dishonouring the memory of those dead.

I question your ability to form a coherent value-system.

Not standing for a minutes silence is not dishonouring anyone.

This is the way the world ends. Not with a bang but a whimper.
I'm merely reaffirming my position on freedom of expression. I'm completely aware people have the right to levy harsh condemnation for these student's behaviour, as much as these students have the right to express themselves. Not sure what you extracted from my original post but evidently it seems like you interpreted it incorrectly.
It seemed as if you were implying I thought they should be coerced into honouring the remembrance proceedings, although I very well could've misread what you meant.

Not only does it dishonour those who died, it dishonours the very foundation of France as a country.

If you don't think the actions of those specific students was in some way condemn-able, then you really are quite seriously morally confused. Explicitly choosing to go against the simple precedent of remembrance being exercised is quite a clear repudiation of the memory of those being remembered. . . You can't reach any other conclusion.

I don't know actually, it seems like allowing them to choose not to honour those who died is just as important for freedom of expression as allowing them (Cartoonists) to draw muhammed. Sure it makes them look like jackasses, but it's their choice.

I'm not saying they are right to do so, but if a group of people had offended your religious beliefs then it's unlikely you are going to pay much respect to them if they died. It's edgy teenage stupidity, but the logic at least makes sense in my mind.

It's certainly condemnable, but it doesn't mean they shouldn't be allowed to express their thoughts/feelings on the matter.

(Also, lol at psyduck giving two shits about freedom of speech for once. Take a picture folks, I doubt this will last.)

His eyebrows sparkling, his white beard hangs down to his chest. The thatched mats, spread outside his chise, spread softly, his splendid attos. He polishes, cross-legged, his makiri, with his eyes completely absorbed.

He is Ainu.

The god of Ainu Mosir, Ae-Oine Kamuy, descendant of Okiku-Rumi, He perishes, a living corpse. The summers day, the white sunlight, unabrushed, ends simply through his breath alone.
As an American, from Kindergarten to our senior year of high school, we're expected to stand and recite the pledge of allegiance and follow up with a moment of silence. I think that if you have to recite an oath every day to stay loyal to a country, then it's not much of an oath, and I refuse to do it. I have the right not to do so, and I take it.

However, I stand up and stay silent during the pledge and the moment following. There's a difference in agreeing with something and being a respectful, courteous human being. Ruining the atmosphere and speaking out at a time when people are reflecting is rude and despicable.

You will find out who you are not a thousand times, before you ever discover who you are. I hope you find peace in yourself and learn to love instead of hate.
As disrespectful as it may be, they have the right not to stand up.

Forcing them to pay respects really doesn't make us any better than the terrorists, as ironic as it may be.
I'm saying they're cunts for not respecting the people who died in the name of the very freedom they're exercising. They can refuse to stand, or speak during a minute's silence, all they like--but I won't sit idly by at such flagrant hypocrisy and moral insanity.

You know, this is the same type of argument Conservatives use to bitch out people who won't stand for the Pledge of Allegiance/National Anthem over here.
People have died.
Still not really an excuse to stand for a minutes silence. A minute silence for remembering those that died in a war? Sure. But for 17 that died because of a terrorist attack? Eh not so much. People die everyday.

I actually have to agree with this one.  Standing up for your nation's "loyalty" isn't really the same as giving a respectful silence for people who were murdered over a cartoon.

Just a quick comment on the cartoon, I actually saw a comment on a website the other day that made sense.  "How about instead of making fun of the religion, make fun of the terrorists and the fundamentalist extremists."

You do realize that many people here associate the Pledge/Anthem with out military, correct? Many see it as saluting them, as well as the country - including those that died.

I agree with the first part. My response to the second part would be:
